The fundamental objective of seismology is to study the temporal and spatial seismicity and their characteristics. The seismological data in Korea can be classified as two groups-historical earthquakes obtained from the list of historical literature by Lee(2006) from A. D 2 to 1904 and a part of instrumental earthquakes from 1905 to 1945 reported by Lee(2003) and KMA(1945~2007). The active period of earthquake occurrence was high between 1640 and 1720, seismically high after 1978. The b value in the magnitude-frequency relation for the historical earthquakes was 0.4 and 0.6841 for the instrumental earthquakes. The energy release of historical earthquakes was mostly high in the southeastern and western part of the peninsula and Kyungsang basin. The frequency distribution of historical earthquakes indicates rather diffuse seismicity over the peninsula not well related to tectonic boundaries of the peninsula. It shows much lower seismicity in the northeastern part of the peninsula compared with other regions. The energy release of instrumental earthquakes was mostly high in the northwestern and southeastern part of the peninsula. The frequency of instrumental earthquakes was high in the western part of the south Korea, eastern part of the Kyungsang basin, east sea, southeastern part of the Okcheon Zone, especially in the southeastern part of the Kyeonggi Massif.
