The purpose of this study is to provide scientific data for the kinematic variables of dynamic postural control and the effects of ocular movement on postural balance control by analyzing the turn motions on balance beam of female gymnasts so as to help improve their play on balance beam. In order to find the causes of successful and unsuccessful turn motion on balance beam and demonstrate the relationships between dynamic postural control and ocular movement, this study compared the analysis results for ocular movement in alignment with the changes in dynamic postural control variables such as the angular displacements of head and trunk, head-trunk angular speed, body center movement, and torque. To improve the level of contribution of this paper and give feedback to the subjects who participated in the experiment in this study, the author provided the analysis results of this study to the subjects and interviewed them for their sensory experiences during actual performance. A summary of the interviews is presented together with the analysis results. 1. E.O.G. Analysis When the turn motion succeeded, the ocular movement typically showed a circular graph pattern from first quadrant to fourth quadrant around the origin. When it failed, the left turn and right turn showed different patterns: the left turn leaned toward the third and fourth quadrants while the right turn leaned toward the first and second quadrants. In most cases the eyeball moved in opposite direction from the turn direction until 180°, and at 180° the eyeball moved in the same direction as the turn direction. In the case of left turn, the eyeball moved in opposite direction in the landing section; in the case of right turn, however, it moved in the same direction. Ocular movement varied between success and failure, and also between left turn and right turn. 2. Analysis of Dynamic Postural Control Kinematic variables to analyze dynamic postural control were angular displacements of head and trunk along the left-right axis and front-back axis. The angular displacement of head was found to play an important role in maintaining balance because it showed different results between success and failure. In particular, the angular displacement of head along the left-right axis seems to affect the success and failure of turn motion because the left turn succeeded when the angle during bending and extending was close to 0°, but it failed when the angle was large. The movement of the head and trunk segments along the vertical axis, which is a angular speed variable, varied between success and failure of turn motion and also between left turn and right turn. This result suggests that the head-trunk angular speed of right turn was insufficient in comparison with the left turn. The left turning subjects showed the most successful motion when the head-trunk angular speed showed a periodic pattern and every segment exhibited similar angular speed. The movement of body center to the turn direction was greater in failure than in success and in right turn than in left turn, indicating unstable motion in the same way as angular displacement and angular speed mentioned above. Regarding torque, when the left turn motion succeeded in the landing section, the torque gradually decreased from the front to the origin; when it failed, however, the torque increased to the front. In contrast, when the right turn failed, the torque increased to the back. Regarding the torque along the front-back axis, the torque of the right turn was greater than that of the left turn. In the landing section of left turn, the torque increased to the later- rotation while in the landing section of right turn, the torque increased to the medial-rotation. The torque increased further in the case of failed motion. This supports the result of angular displacement and angular speed variables in which the left turn moved more than 360° and the right turn moved less than 360°, leading to a failed motion. This result suggests that torque control plays an important part in successful landing of the turn motion on balance beam, and the torque of the body center along the left-right axis and front-back axis affects the dynamic postural control. 3. Comparison between E.O.G. and Dynamic Postural Control Among the dynamic postural control variables, angular displacement and ocular movement are closely related. During a turn motion, the ocular movement is in opposite direction of the angular displacement of trunk along the left-right axis. This seems to be because the gymnast tries to look at the balance beam or the front to keep balance on balance beam. Furthermore, the angular displacement of head along the left-right axis and the change of angular speed of head and trunk showed different results from the movement of left-right ocular movement. When the motion succeeded, the gymnast performed spoting motion but when it failed, the spoting motion was insufficient. Although body center movement and torque were not directly related to the ocular movement, they were indirectly related to the ocular movement by affecting dynamic postural control. To sum up the above results, kinematic variables that affected dynamic postural control were the angular displacement of head along the left-right axis and front-back axis, and the angular speed along the vertical axis. The body center movement and the torque of the body center along the left-right axis and front-back axis were found to have a high influence on landing motion which is regarded as the most important in a turn motion on balance beam. These kinematic variables were also was found to have a close correlation with he ocular movement. The findings of this study revealed the causes of failure in turn motion on balance beam. Interviews with the subjects found that they did not understand spoting during a turn motion. Therefore, coaches must not overlook the importance of ocular movement in turn motion and training on thi
