The nuclear power plant has a long life cycle without the fewest effluence of harmful substances and greatly facilitates the development of science and its related industry due to the technology-intensive generation of electricity. However, with a high utilization of atomic power generation, the state diagnosis, the development of core technology and the evaluation of materials for the stability or the reliability of nuclear power plants are strongly mentioned. The purpose of present study is to investigate high temperature corrosion behaviors of carbon steel pipes for the main parts of nuclear power plant system such as steam generator, pressure device and coolant channel. The corrosion test of carbon steels was performed under the pressurized atmosphere. Moreover, the high-temperature corrosion device was designed for the corrosion experiment. The nondestructive tests by ultrasonic wave and acoustic emission was carried out to examine the corrosion damages of carbon steels. The corrosion test device was designed for the heating level up to the temperature of 400 ℃ under a maximum water pressure of 25 MPa. The grain size of carbon steels tended to increase with the increase of corrosion period, accompanying the creation of Fe₃O₄ phase. Especially, the carbon steels represented the weight loss of about 2.5%, after the corrosion period of 20 weeks. The tensile strength of carbon steel tended to decrease with the increase of the corrosion period. As a result of the ultrasonic test, although the ultrasonic velocity of carbon steels was nearly constant, regardless of corrosion period, their attenuation coefficient significantly increased with the increase of corrosion period due to the activation of corrosion defects. As the corrosion period of carbon steels increase, the duration time and AE counts for acoustic emission greatly increased accompanying the constant amplitude or similar energy.
