Speaker factors for affecting speech intelligibility of children with cleft palate LEE, Ju Hee Dept. of Speech and Language Pathology The Graduate school of Social Education Myongji University Directed by Choi Yaelin, Ph.D It is cleft palate that causes to velopharyngeal incompetence(VPI) that makes speech produce appropriately. It occurs structual and functional disorders such as hypernasality, hyponasality and nasal emission that are major problems of speakers with cleft palate. These characteristics of speaking affect speech intelligibility of speakers with cleft palate. The speech intelligibility of speaking is used by the index to assess and to treat speech of speech disorder speakers. Thus, we estimate the speech intelligibility of speakers how it is communicated and identified to listeners for the evaluation. There are many factors to affact the intelligibility of speakers. It affects the speech intelligibility of speakers because of factors such as speaker factors, disorder level, age and sex, listener factors, age, the experience of evaluation and familiarity of tasks, and speech factors, rate, pitch and loudness. Therefore, among several factors of affecting the speech intelligibility of speakers, our investigations were shown whether the speech intelligibility of speakers was directly related with factors such as the speaker factors, age, language level, reading ability, articulation ability and nasalance score of six children with cleft palate. we estimated language level of children by four different methods which are used BASA(basic academic skills assessment) to assess to reading ability, assessment of phonology and articulation for children(APAC) to assess to PCC(percentage of consonant correct), and Nasometer to measure nasal score. Listeners transcribed what they did listen from recording tapes for evaluating children's speech intelligibility. The investigations were shown that the speech intelligibility of children with cleft palate significantly was not related with the reasons : age, language level, reading ability, articulation ability and nasalance score.
