Abstract Passive sentences in high school English textbooks are analyzed on the basis of formality theory in this study as an attempt to validate the authenticity of learning materials used in Korean high schools. Previous research on the issue dealt with reading passages only, ignoring the observation that languages can vary depending on formality. This study is motivated by the fact that native speakers use passive forms of sentences more frequently in written English or highly formal register than in spoken or lower formal register. This study pays special attention to five categories: formality of passive sentences, varieties of passive auxiliary verbs, presence and absence of the agent, presence and absence of ‘by+NP’, the frequency of the ‘by+NP’ structure, and analyzing passive sentences based on the reason they are used. The results of this study show that passive sentences are found more frequently in written texts than in colloquial listening and speaking scripts. In addition, the frequency of ‘by+NP’ structure is similar to the study result of the passive forms used by native speakers. Also, the reasons that the agent is shown and passive forms are used, are agreed with the previous researches into passive forms used by native speakers. This study concludes that high school English textbooks used by Korean English learners are properly written as authentic learning materials as far as passive forms are concerned. That is, passive sentences presented for Korean students show similar distributional patterns as English native speakers. However, as auxiliary verbs of passive forms, ‘be’ verb is used at a very high rate and other forms of passive auxiliary verbs except ‘get’ seldom appeared. Therefore, to be more authentic materials, various auxiliary verbs other than ‘be' should be presented in English textbooks.
