The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that art therapy as a process of ‘Internalization of Good Objects’ is effective to reduce the degree of depressive symptoms in an adolescent with depression. From Klein's perspective, depression derives from anxieties about loss, feelings of guilt and also from conflicts between ambivalent feelings toward an object of affection that were not integrated adequately at a depressive position in early developmental stages. In addition, adolescents suffering from depression confront difficulties in peer relations and school lives due to distorted and negative thought and viewpoints. In this context, to investigate the concrete changes observed in an adolescent with depression in thoughts and viewpoints, peer relations and everyday lives after the art therapy was suggested. Theoretically, understandings of depression from Klein's point of view, procedures of art therapy and roles of a therapist were examined. As a case study, an example of H was introduced, an adolescent who displayed distorted and extreme thought at early therapy and the phases of her changes through 52 sessions were divided into 4 categories : projection of her paranoidschizoid psychological status under circumstances of art therapy, introjection of good external objects and changes of internal objects, appearance of independent recognition and changes in object relations, reparation of object through symbolization and acceptance of reality. To analyze the results, the changes, that is, her decrease of depression were interpreted with regards to Klein's psychological developmental stages and those in her cognition, thought, emotion and character were studied with reference to the results of a integrated adolescent psychology examination which was given before and after the therapy program. Followings are the results. Psychological cares, provided during art therapy, such as art materials, art works, conversations before and after the works, and the positive attitude of the therapist were internalized to H as a good object experience and led her internal objects which were splitted in hostility at early therapy to intimate integration, which enabled her to carry out object relations at the level of whole object, not at the level of partial one. Although her active recognition of herself through therapy made her suffer depressive anxiety which means the anxiety about harming the object, she came to repair her lost object in herself through symbolization process and overcome the depressive position. By means of this art therapy, her early chronic depression was lessen and she was able to become generous toward herself. In addition, stable integration of ambivalent feelings facilitated her to have positive, objective, realistic and insightful thoughts and viewpoints. Moreover, she exhibited the decline in her irritative, attacking tendency and improvement in eating habit, retarded studying, maladjustment to school life and hard peer relationships which are main features of adolescent depression. Additionally, she showed diminution of typical depressive symptoms like depression, anxiety, anger and short concentration span. As a conclusion, art therapy as a process of ‘Internalization of Good Objects’ proved to play a efficient role in treatment of an adolescent with depression.
