Spacing is part of the spelling system that makes it easier to use written language. That aims at conveying the meaning of sentences in an accurate manner. In other words, that is mandatory for reading efficiency. As every single word has its own separate concept, word spacing makes it possible to prevent any possible misunderstanding in advance and to make out the meaning of writing. In fact, however, spacing education isn't yet on the right track, and students don't pay attention to that, either. Effective teaching methods for that should be developed, and in order to make it happen, what errors students make in spacing should be grasped first of all. The purpose of this study was to examine the errors that middle schoolers made in the use of parts of speech including postposition, bound noun, auxiliary declinable word, prenoun and adverb. The findings of the study were as follows: As for the spacing of postposition, the students investigated didn't make a frequent errors in general, which indicated that they were aware of the spacing principles for postposition. By the type of postposition, they made the greatest errors in spacing auxiliaries, which implied that although they had a full understanding of the spacing principles for postposition, they didn't get an accurate grip on the types of post- position. They made a more frequent error in spacing bound nouns than postpositions. Among bound nouns, the error rate for universal bound nouns was higher, and they didn't understand well how to space ‘것 ‘지’, and ‘줄’ that were respectively a universal bound noun, subjective bound noun and adverbial bound noun. They should receive education about bound noun and how to discriminate between postposition and the ending, as the two might easily be confused with each other. There was a strong tendency for most of the students to write auxiliary declinable words without spacing them. They didn't know when auxiliary declinable words needed space, and the reason seemed that they couldn't discriminate between auxiliary declinable words and declinable words or between compound declinable words and declinable words added by auxiliary declinable words. In the event of prenoun spacing, the error rate of demonstrative prenoun spacing was higher. In particular, they made a frequent error in spacing attribute prenoun ‘옛, 첫’, demonstrative prenoun ‘그, 이’, and numerical prenoun ‘명’. It signified that all of them made a frequent error in spacing single-syllable prenouns. Besides, they confused prenoun with prefix, which led to another spacing errors. Specifically, they should learn about single-syllable prenoun so that they could distinguish it from complex word. In the event of adverb spacing, the error rate of ingredient adverb spacing was higher, which denoted that they didn't get a full grip on ingredient adverb, and that they weren't well conscious of spacing, either. Like the case of prenoun, they especially made a frequent error in spacing single-syllable adverbs. As for the spacing of single-syllable noun, compound word and ending, they made an error often on spacing single-syllable nouns. They had a strong tendency to attach a single- syllable noun to the previous word, viewing it as part of the previous word. Thus, they didn't have a good understanding of single-syllable noun. In terms of compound word spacing, they made few errors since they had a strong inclination to write compound words without any spacing, but they made 15 mistakes in spacing a compound declinable word ‘하다’ Concerning the spacing of the ending, approximately 28 mistakes took place, probably because of their poor consciousness of spacing rather than poor understanding of the ending. Middle schoolers are yet unaware of the exact meaning of words and parts of speech, and they consequently make a mistake in spacing. What's more, they aren't fully conscious of spacing. The efforts by this study to look into the spacing errors of students to discuss what difficulties they faced and what made them to make spacing errors suggested that they should wake up to the necessity of spacing for writing, and efficient teaching methods should be prepared to fix their academic deficiencies in this field.
