School curriculum doesn't give due weight to education about the history of literature, and there aren't energetic research efforts to find out effective and applicable teaching methods about that. The purpose of this study was to delve into the nature of the history of literature from an educational perspective and to seek out workable solutions for literary history education. It's specifically meant to shed light on the nature, background, necessity and actual state of literary history education and relevant teaching methods in an attempt to reconstruct an authentic instructional design model for that education. Chapter II described the necessity, nature and background of literary history education. Education of the history of literature referred to teaching learners to take a systematic approach to literary works, to understand the unique features of Korean literature, to look at literary works they read in light of the history of literature, and to enjoy literature in a more creative and productive manner. Chapter III analyzed school curricula and textbooks to figure out the reality of literary history education and problems with that. As a result of looking into the curricula and textbooks, it's found that the nature and educational significance of the history of literature weren't properly reflected. Therefore the nature of the history of literature was discussed in this study, and it's suggested that structured teaching contents and methods be prepared to provide sequential education about the concepts of literary history. Literary history education shouldn't merely be confined to any particular segment of textbooks. Instead, that should be conducted in a manner to let learners get a big picture of literary works from the standpoint of literary history. Chapter Ⅳ presented specific teaching methods for that education and elaborated an instructional design model geared toward middle school ninth graders, focusing on the selection of figure of speech and visual materials tailored to their cognitive level. The model intended to teach learners to understand and appreciate literary works from the viewpoint of literary history. Namely, that was designed to improve the understanding of learners about literary works in conjunction with their contemporary times, and to let then think of their meaning and significance. In the model, a teacher should act not as a mere deliverer of knowledge but as a catalyst who stimulates learners to construct their own learning in every learning process and grasp what they have learned by giving a significant explanation, stirring up cooperative learning and offering inclusive instruction. In effect, this study attempted to pave the way for more understandable, positive and applicable learning by arguing that curriculum should be constructed in consideration of the nature of literary history instead of just offering fragmentary knowledge. At the same time, this study tried to take a holistic approach to educational methods that were at the center of disputes on education of the history of literature, but didn't look into actual learner-teacher interaction in classroom situations and teaching- learning methods they utilized. In the future, more specific research efforts should be channeled into having literary history education take root as the hub of literary education.
