Through analyzing spatial metaphors of Midang's poetry which were woven delicately, this study aimed to prove the poetic meaning and tension and the expansion and renewal of the poet's cognition. As the discussions on the space of Jung-Joo Seo' poetry had made remarkable achievements, the most important issue of this study was to obtain a distintion from those previous studies. Unlike the past studies which clarified the changes in the space consciousness of Midang's poetry, this study focused on showing the creativeness of his cognition by discovering the representation style of his multi-lateral space consciousness using Hrushovski's frame of reference. This study examined the changes of his space consciousness chronologically with considering the overlapping of periods in some poems. In chapter Ⅱ, it was discovered that the aspect of 'confinement' and that of 'sensual and exhaustion' were parallel and the condition of loss of direction was embodied in his early poetry. In the first section dealing with the aspect of confinement, the closed spatial metaphor which meant horizontal stop and the sinking spatial metaphor which meant vertical end were made. The exterior 'wall' of colonized condition was sticked together with the destined 'wall' of humans who inherited the original sin on the basis of confinement consciousness. In the second section dealing with aspects of the sensual and exhaustion, the open earth became a spatial metaphor of secret room owing to the overflow of irresistible desire, and another metaphor of no space was made owing to the shift to the state of lack of desire. In his early poems, the state of oblivion of direction was embodied in which the poetic subject could not recognize the direction by being confined and falling into sensuality. In chapter Ⅲ, it was examined that the metaphor of vertical space was made, since the poetic subject of poems of the middle period overcame the state of oblivion of direction and headed for the transcendental world. In the first section dealing with the metaphor of transcendental desire, it was discovered that the spatial metaphor heading for the transcendental by overcoming the state of oblivion of direction. In the second section dealing with the metaphor of eternal ascending, there was the dynamics which led the ascending consciousness with mediating the sky and the earth. In the third section dealing with the metaphor of the completion of eternity, the eternity was achieved through the chain of cyclic structure. The vertical spatial metaphor in his poems of the middle period was made owing to his inner desire to overcome the earthly space. The poet, Midang, tried to transcend into the sky among the vertical space structure of the confrontation of the sky and the earth. This change of space was related to the situation of the emancipation of our nation. In chapter Ⅳ, it was examined that the spatial metaphor of intersection of the divine and the secular was built by overlapping of the opposing spaces such as high/ low, sky/ earth and divine/ secular in「Jilmajae myth」through the interaction of metaphoric meaning. This appeared as a cosmic mirror metaphor, an earthly body metaphor, and a supernatural mediating metaphor through natural phenomenon. These were embodied the universal unconsciousness of men desiring for eternal lives as the intersectional areas overlapping the vertical and horizontal spaces. In「Jilmajae myth」, the heavenly space of 'sky' and the earthly space of 'Jilmajae town' obtained the intersectional space by linking with metaphors. Midang deconstructed the boundaries of the secular and the divine by integrating rather than emphasizing the opposition of the heaven and earth. In chapter Ⅴ, it was examined that, by the formation of centripetal spatial metaphor, his poetry of middle and late period had the orientation toward the inner world or the center world from the outer world. In the first section dealing with the spatial metaphor of 'Sok(the inside),' the return to the native town which was the fundamental world of men appeared through the orientation toward the inner world of 'Sok' of plants. In the second section dealing with the spatial metaphor of 'Gok,' the realistic and positive attitude of life was concreted with the return to the native town. In the third section dealing with the spatial metaphor of 'Gumung(the hole)' the eternal love was achieved through being to condensed to a minimal space of 'hole' with orientation toward the center. These had the same life style in common in which the self obtained the sameness by reconciling to the disconnected world. In chapter Ⅵ, it was examined the space in which the centrifugal spatial metaphor was made and expanded to the infinity in the late poems of Midang. His experience of overseas trip became an important chance to form the centrifugal spatial consciousness through expanding his cognition. In the first section dealing with the spatial metaphor of 'dance', the formless space consciousness appeared through dispersing and volatilizing the ontological heavies made from the orientation toward outspoken world. In the second section dealing with the expanded metaphor of hometown, the expansion of hometown space was achieved through the union of heterogeneous spaces of 'world' and 'Korea.' In the third section dealing with the temple of the mountain metaphor, 'the mountain' was metaphorically unioned with the sanctified 'woman' or 'goddess' and transformed into the temple of mystic maternity. Expanding to an universal level through the poems of world mountains, the direction toward the transcendental, thus, became to obtain the centrifugal space beyond the vertical space. The metaphoric space with a direction or orientation was formed, and poetic meanings and tensions were created in Midang's poetry. Though the spatial metaphors appeared as various aspects in Midang's poetry, they were identical in that they pursued the world of sameness not by the division or discontinuation but by the integrity of space. It is true that the metaphoric structure became simple and the level of tension became weak in Midang's later poems, but, as a whole, his poetry had complex metaphoric structures and poetic tensions were intensified as poetic meanings were expanded. This study obtained a distinction from those previous studies on spaces in that, as examined in this study, the transforming process of spatial metaphors in Midang's poetry was that of examining the trail of his complex thinking system beyond the level just to examine the changes of his space consciousness representing the subject's life style.
