This is a qualitative research on what mentally disabled persons experience in the process of changing their environment from long term hospitalization at mental hospital and asylum to independent housing in community. Research participants were selected from people with experience of at least 2 years of hospitalization at mental hospital or asylum among mentally disabled people having started independent housing for 6 months or longer. Selection of research participants was based on purposive sampling. In-depth interview was continued for about 3 months from December 10th, 2007 to March 10th, 2008. 12 people participated in the research. Collected data were analyzed by utilizing Colaizzi method among phenomenological research methodologies. As a result of the analysis, 54 formulated meanings and 20 themes were derived and we could intuitively know that 'self-empowerment journey' is the essential theme. Because this essential theme is an analysis of experience including the moment before starting independent housing and current living condition, we could make a classification of 6 theme clusters by advancing process of experience. Below is the detailed contents. The theme cluster 1 was , and 'following', 'free as dream' were the sub themes. The theme cluster 2 was , and sub categories were 'preparing seeds', 'grabbing the chance', 'companionship'. The theme cluster 3 , and 'living alone is unfamiliar', 'hesitating' were included. The theme cluster 4 was , and it is about 'hope and decision', 'sharing hearts', 'my home as a resting place', and 'use of social support'. The theme cluster 5 was and sub themes were 'responsible for my home', 'responsible for my living', 'responsible for economic state', 'responsible for health', 'preparing for the future'. The theme cluster 6 was , and sub themes included 'improvement in mental disorder', 'improvement in relationships', 'proud of me', 'confident life', and so on. As a result of the analysis, participants experienced that 'my ability' is consistently getting bigger in the process of maintaining independent housing life. In the place under control, they just followed what they supposed to do because their power was too weak. And they grabbed the chance to start the independent housing. After starting the independent housing, they seemed to hesitate for their limited abilities at first. But they soon began to take care of their own life based on strong belief and hope for the future. Participants who have successfully done the independent housing felt proud of themselves finding 'their own ability' that improved mental disability, personal relationship, and everyday life. Throughout this journey of growing 'one's own ability', independent housing is the place providing participants with the new family members as well as giving peace and comforts with friendly relationship. It also became the meaning of home to go over all the difficulties. This research is meaningful in that we can possibly understand how people with mentally disabled get to have strength in their ability by looking at their experiences from hospitalized life to independent housing in community. Particularly, we could find out the mentally disabled people have possibilities of improvement in mental disorder, personal relationship, self-esteem, and everyday life through stable independent housing operated by themselves. Based on the research result, we could propose a direction on social welfare practice. Mental health institutions have more interests on independent housing for hospitalized mentally disabled people and develop various educational programs related with the housing so that patients can prepare their independent life with hope. Institutions should also develop and apply programs based on the independent living model emphasizing approaches about community support system, risk management, self choice and control, and so on. And active participation including community support system and connection is necessary for mentally disabled people living alone by independent housing. For mentally disabled people well adapted to the independent housing, inward approaches answering for the request is necessary. Social workers providing services in mental health institutions should practice their role based on consumer ability strengthening model. Preparation of support policies for expansion of independent housing, operation of semi independent housing where staffs are not assigned, and providing with the case managers for independent housing support are necessary conditions. To understand independent housing of mentally disabled people more in depth, it is necessary to conduct researches on disabled people who have given up living alone as well as families and case managers who affect their lives directly and indirectly.
