This paper has its purpose in investigating and analyzing the scientific misconceptions in scientifically gifted students who have been chosen through a multiple selection process at the national level. The results could be used as basic data in finding a guideline for forming scientific concepts in gifted students. When previous papers on special education for the gifted are examined, there are many related studies, such as identification of gifted students and identification tools, measurement of progress in gifted student education and index development, program development, and teaching-learning strategies, but studies on gifted students’ learning effectiveness or their misconceptions are inadequate. According to the opinions of structuralism scholars, conviction in students is highly continuous, strong, and difficult to change even through learning, and they do not easily give up their preconceptions. Accordingly, there is a need to discover what these preconceptions are before they form or become fixed, and make an effort to change them to scientific concepts. In this paper, therefore, the misconceptions in the areas of “electromagnetics” and “light and wave” that scientifically gifted middle school students learn in programs operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education were examined, something that had never been studied before, and a comparative analysis was carried out to determine the difference in the level of misconceptions and their types according to gender, grade, and area (education district). The results can be summarized as follows.First, even though there may be differences between boys and girls in their understanding of scientific concepts when it comes to specific items, there was no general difference in their formation of scientific concepts in the areas of electromagnetics, light and wave.Second, there was no statistically significant difference in the degree or types of misconceptions in physics according to grades, between the 1st and 2nd years scientifically gifted students.Third, the results of analyzing the level of misconceptions shown in the responses according to education office districts show a statistically significant difference. With Jungbu District Office of Education in Seoul, there were significant differences in three items, and with the Gandong, Gangseo, and Dongjak district offices, there were significant differences in one item each. In particular, with regard to the “meaning of images and the process of seeing images,” the types of misconceptions were found to be very diverse for each education office.Fourth, the items that showed a high level of misconception in the area of electromagnetics were electrified body and electric charge, connection of electrical network and comparison of light bulb brightness, the relationship between marked electric power and the brightness of other light bulbs, electrical charge between magnets, and the material that needs to be used in the coil for making electromagnets. Thus the formation of scientific concepts in gifted students was analyzed to be insufficient.Fifth, the items that showed high level of misconception in the area of light and wave were the speed of wave transmission, frequency, relationship with wavelength, the process of seeing images and their location, the form of light source and object shadow, the size of image shown in a mirror according to distance, and refraction of light. It is analyzed that, generally, there was no formation of basic scientific concepts regarding changes in wave speed and their cause, the process of seeing images, and the phenomenon of light refraction. It is hoped that the results of this paper will be used not only as basic data in discovering the types of misconception formation and the way scientifically gifted students retain their misconceptions, but also for establishing an effective guideline to change the misconceptions of students to scientific concepts.
