Coastal aquifers have specific characteristics created by the interactions between continental fresh groundwater and seawater. The groundwater level fluctuates in response to tidal variations, and density differences allow seawater to intrude underneath the freshwater of coastal aquifers. Hydrodynamic balance between freshwater and seawater constantly changes due to tidal fluctuations, and subsequently affects the hydrologic system. To comprehend this hydrologic dynamics, both analytical and field studies were carried out.A two-dimensional semi-analytical solution is presented to analyze stream-aquifer interactions in a coastal aquifer where groundwater level responds to tidal effects. The conceptual model considered is a two-dimensional subsurface system with stream and coastline boundaries at right angle. Sensitivity analysis indicates that streambed leakance has no influence over the amplitude of groundwater fluctuations, but the effect of stream stage increases with increasing leakance. Little difference is observed in the water level for different aquifer penetration ratios with narrow stream width. As stream width increases, the effect of aquifer penetration by the stream on water level increases. An increased specific yield value results in decreased amplitude of water fluctuations and mean water level; thus shows that variations in water-level due to stream and tidal boundaries are sensitive to specific yield. To observe the tidal effect on groundwater-seawater flows in the coastal aquifer of a volcanic island, various field studies have been carried out at the seawater intrusion monitoring wells located in the eastern part of Jeju Island, Korea; these includes monitoring the fluctuations of groundwater and tide levels, electrical and temperature logging, and 2-D heat-pulse flowmeter tests. The use of a two-dimensional heat-pulse flowmeter enables us to relate the differences in flow velocities and directions related to geology and tidal fluctuations. Integrating various physical logging and flowmeter data with water-level fluctuations allows us better understanding of the behavior of fresh and seawater flow in the coastal aquifer. In addition, time-series data on electrical conductivity and temperature variations are obtained at various depths in multilayered coastal aquifers on a volcanic island. Semidiurnal and semimonthly tidal variations induces dynamic fluctuations in electrical conductivity (EC) at some depths, while no significant variations at other depths. The EC and temperature data reveals that saltwater transport characteristics differ significantly, depending on the hydraulic properties of geologic layers. The shape of EC variations shows diverse patterns including sinusoidal, square shaped, and no variations due to hydrogeological characteristics (e.g. hydraulic conductivity, dispersion parameters, etc.). Continuous monitorings of EC and temperature at multiple depths are powerful tools for quantifying the transport of saline water by tidal variations in multilayered coastal aquifers.
