DC PACVD(Direct Current Plasma Assistant Chemical Vapor Deposition) 방법을 이용하여 NCD(Nanocrystalline Diamond) 박막의 합성을 시도하고, 증착된 박막의 두께 및 조도가 균일하고, 매끄러운 경면성의 표면을 갖는 NCD 박막 합성을 구현하기 위한 방법론을 연구하고자 하였다.

Nucleation behaviour during Nanocrystalline diamond film deposition by DC PACVD was investigated, to develope a methodology to achieve the uniform thickness and roughness as well as the mirror-smooth surface of the film. The effect of cathode temperature, substrate material, hydrogen plasma treatment of the substrate before seeding on the nucleation behavior was investigated in DC PACVD environment. The microstructure, the nucleation density and the crystallinity was analysed using SEM, TEM and optical microscopy. The surface roughness of the film was characterized by surface profilometer. Surface atomic bond structure was investigated by XPS. Wetting angle measurement was performed to supplement the surface analysis.
The nucleation density was strongly dependent on the nucleation density. This was due to the enhanced carbon depletion from the DC plasma to the cathode surface at lower cathode temperature domain in the present experimental range. The carbon thus formed on the cathode surface was very hard in nature and could not be easily removed. At excessively high cathode temperature range, on the other hand, arc transition occurred due to contamination of the cathode surface by another from of carbon.
The nucleation density decreased in the order of the bare Si wafer, SiO₂ -coated Si wafer, Si₃N₄ -coated Si wafer. This tendency could be attributed to two factors.: physisorption of the nanodiamond seeds, during diamond slurry ultrasonication, onto the substrate surface and the anode glow formation which is strongly dependent on the electric resistance of the substrate.
The excessive methane concentration at the early stages of the deposition had little effect on nucleation, while the hydrogen plasma treatment of the substrate before seeding was found to drastically enhance the nucleation. The latter was attributed to the enhanced H-termination and subsequent increase of physisorption of nanodiamond seeds during nanodiamond slurry ultrasonication process.
The strength of anode glow formation on the substrate surface at the early stage of the deposition process, which was strongly dependent on the electrical resistance of the substrate, was found to exert a strong effect on the nucleation.: The stronger anode glow resulted in a greatly enhance nucleation density.
