EPS is an ultra-lightweight material with a low compressibility, high durability, workability, and stability. The distinct advantages propelled the wide application of the EPS for various types of civil engineering structures and constructions. It is especially known to be very effective for soft soils and steep slopes.
EPS is widely used in north European countries, North America, and Japan. In Japan, in which the EPS was introduced by Norway in 1986, 600,000㎥ of EPS was used up to 1993. It is by far the country with the highest usage of the EPS. EPS was introduced in 1993 in Korea as the backfill material of the bridge abutment. The usage of the EPS has been growing ever since. However, up till now, limited research has been performed, focusing on laboratory tests to obtain physical and mechanical properties of the EPS, short-term field tests and numerical simulations to estimate the ground behavior during construction. For proper evaluation of the effectiveness and field applicability of the EPS, long-term behavior of the EPS and the ground reinforced by the EPS is warranted. However, such research has not been performed.
This thesis studies the long-term behavior of the EPS and the ground seven years after its application. The EPS was extracted from the field and extensive laboratory tests have been performed to evaluate the long-term behavior. Comprehensive field and laboratory tests were performed on the ground at which the EPS is applied and the changed in physical and mechanical properties were investigated. In addition, the long-term ground deformation characteristics were investigated through vertical and horizontal displacement field measurements.
The results of the tests on the extracted EPS showed that the long-term behavior of the EPS was excellent. The unit weight, compressive strength, and the absorptiveness did not change with time. The long-term creep deformation and deformation due to repeated loading were both very limited. The ground at which the EPS was applied showed significant improvement. The plasticity index is greatly reduced, while the N value and the shear strength were highly increased. The void ratio is also significantly reduced. In addition, the long-term field measurements showed that the surface settlement and horizontal deformation was greatly limited, and demonstrated the effectiveness of the EPS.
Finally, comprehensive suite of numerical analyses have been performed to evaluate the capability of a numerical simulation to simulate and predict the long-term deformation of the ground at which the EPS is applied and compared to actual field measurements. Comparisons showed that the numerical analysis can accurately predict the settlement and horizontal deformation. To increase the accuracy of the analysis even further, the time-dependent properties of the EPS were modeled. However, due to the limited change in the material properties of the EPS, the improved analysis showed small difference.
Numerical simulations were further used to compare the ground response for the embankment filled and the EPS applied grounds. Due to the lightweight of the EPS, the EPS applied ground showed 30% lower settlement and lower horizontal stress behind the bridge abutment compared to the filled ground.
