The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of assertiveness training on school children's self-expression, sociability and classroom cohesiveness. Three research questions were posed: 1. Does an assertiveness program have any effects on the self- expression of elementary students? 2. Does an assertiveness program have any effects on the sociability of elementary students? 3. Does an assertiveness program have any effects on the class cohesion of elementary students? The subjects in this study were 68 students who were selected from seven sixth-grade classes in J elementary school in Gyeonggi province after the two classes took pretests in self-expressiveness, sociability and classroom cohesiveness. As a result of analyzing the test data by utilizing MANOVA, the selected students were all equivalent, and an experimental group and control group were organized with 34 each. The experimental group that included 18 boys and 16 girls participated in an assertiveness program in 10 sessions, and no action was taken to the control group that involved 17 boys and 17 girls. After the program was finished, both groups took posttests in self-expression, sociability and class cohesion. MANOVA and paired-samples t-test were employed to make a quantitative analysis of their self-expression, sociability and class cohesion to verify the effect of the program. To make up for the shortcoming of the quantitative analysis, the students were asked to write down how they felt in every session and how they felt about the entire program in the last session, and then their writing was analyzed. According to the quantitative analysis, the following findings were given: First, the experimental group that was exposed to the assertiveness program were significantly better at self-expressiveness in the posttest than the control group that wasn't. There were significant disparities between the two groups in all the subvariables of self-expression that involved content, voice and use of substantive. Second, the experimental group that participated in the assertiveness program were significantly better sociable in the posttest than the control group that didn't. Among the subvariables of sociability, they made a significant progress in cooperation, sympathy and self-controlling, but there was no significant change in self-assertion. Third, the experimental group that took part in the assertiveness program significantly excelled the control group that didn't in the class cohesion posttest. And there were significant intergroup gaps in all the subvariables of class cohesion: environments/atmosphere, trust, morale, a sense of unity and communication. As a result of analyzing their writing about each session and the program to complement the shortcoming of the quantitative analysis, the following findings were given: First, the assertiveness program served to improve the children's self- understanding, and motivated them not to behave in a passive or aggressive manner. Second, the assertiveness program contributed to boosting their understanding of self-expression, easing their passive and aggressive behavior and fostering their self-expression. Third, the assertiveness program contributed to improving their peer relationship and facilitating their acquisition of communicative competence. Fourth the assertiveness program provided an opportunity for them to open themselves, to express themselves in a candid way, and to make their class more trustworthy. The above-mentioned findings illustrated that the assertiveness program had a good effect on bolstering the self-expressiveness, sociability and class cohesion of the elementary schoolers. Accordingly, the findings suggested that the kinds of educational programs designed to help school children express themselves in a confident and clear manner should be applied to school education. As the application of assertiveness training to a whole class as a sort of school counseling is expected to foster not only the self-expressiveness of the students in the class but their sociability and class cohesion, it's more effective to apply this approach at a school level, not a personal one.
