Fo는 영아기(infant)부터 성인 초기(early adulthood)까지 하강하다가 중년기(the period of middle life)에는 비교적 변화가 적은 안정기를 거치며, 노년기에는 성별에 따라 상승하거나 하강하게 된다. 2~4세의 평균 Fo는 남자 297.20Hz(SD 24.92), 여자 296.61Hz(SD 24.23)로 나타난다.

The change of the laryngeal structures according to age can be perceived by life-span changes of pitch. Fundamental frequency (hereafter Fo), is defined as the lowest frequency of a complex periodic sound derived from the number of vibrations per second. Fo declines from infancy through early adulthood and goes through a period of stabilization which has comparatively less change in the mid life period. Fo involves emotional or cultural-social factors besides anatomical-physiological factors, In the period of old age, especially, Fo values can be affected by health conditions and vocal habits of individuals. This research investigates the properties of Fo changes of Koreans according to gender and age, and also examines the properties of Fo at periods of voice mutation and in the old age. The subjects who participated in this experiment consisted of 747 men and 739 women (1,486 in tatal) and live in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces in South Korea. The subjects expressed "corner vowels" (/a/, /i/, /u/), three times each for three seconds, which were then analyzed using MDVP(Mu1ti-dimensiona1 Voice Program)after saving them in CSL(Computerized Speech Lab). A sustained vowel utterance lasting about one second in duration and which is taken to be a stable portion of each vowel was carefully measured. For statistical analyses, SPSS (version 14.0) was used to obtain the values of Fo according to gender and age. To determine whether there is adifference in Fo between men and women according to age, a one-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA and t-test were performed. The changes in Fo by each age are as follows: 1. The mean Fo between the ages of 2 and 4 is 297.20Hz(SD 24.92) forboys and 296.61Hz(SD 24.23) for girls. A two-way analysis of variance was performed. There are no significant difference whih respect to gender in Fo (F_(1,57)=.191). The Fo values decrease with increase in age but there is no clear difference between boys and girls. A significant change is found as afunction of age in the Fo(F_(2,57)=694.597). A Scheffe test revealed significant differences(P<.05) between the Fo data of the 2-year-o1ds and 3-year-o1ds, 3-year-olds and 4-year-o1ds, 2-year-o1d and 4-year-o1ds. Boys and girls have similar Fo values at the age of 2. The Fo values decrease with increases in age but there is no difference between boys and girls. There is no significant age to gender correlation (F_(2,57)=.699), which indicates that changes in Fo values related to age are the same for both genders, In particular, there is a down-step of about 59Hz for boys, and 55Hz for girls between the ages of 2 and 4. The physiological growth and anatomical development of the larynx for three years after birth directly affects Fo. 2. The mean Fo between the ages of 5 and 7 is 253.73Hz(SD 6.72) for boys and 261.06Hz(SD 5.68) for girls. There is a significant difference between boys and girls in Fo(F_(1,57)=83.270). Fo values decrease with increases in age and values for girls are higher than those for boys. Also a significant change is found as a function of age in the Fo(F_(2,57)=73.295). For both genders, the Fo values decrease with increases in age. A post-hoc Scheffe test revealed significant differences(p<.05) between the Fo data of the 5-year-o1ds and 6-year-o1ds, 6-year-o1ds and 7-year-o1ds, 5-year-o1ds and 7-year-o1ds. The results of the these tests reveal significant decreases in Fo per year. Gender and age correlation is not significant(F_(2,57)=.366), with both gensders showing similar decrease in 5-year-o1ds to 7-year-o1ds. 3. The mean Fo between the ages of 8 and 10 is 235.13Hz(SD 6.45) for boys and 250.63Hz(SD 7.73) for girls. There is a significant Fo difference between boys and gir1s(F_(1,57)=245.729) with boys' Fo revealed as higher than girls' Fo. Also a significant change is found as a function in the Fo(F_(2,57)=17.331). A post-hoc Scheffe test revealed significant differences(p<.05) between the Fo data of the 8-year-olds and 9-year-o1ds, 8-year-olds and lO-year-olds. There is a no significant age to gender corre1ation(F_(2,57)=.366). 4. The most obvious vocal change in adolescence occurs during puberty, especially in men. The male hormone testosterone is responsible for the disproportionate growth of the larynx, along with other sexual characteristics. In this experiment, the mean Fo from the ages of 11 to 16 shows 165.30Hz(SD 15.92), for boys and 239.66Hz(SD 8.79) for girls. There is a significant dfference between boys and girls in Fo(F_(1,174)=2503.618). A significant change is found as a function of age in the Fo(F_(5,174)=183.632) with the men showing a marked decrease from ll-year-olds to 14-year-o1ds. There is a significant age to gender correlation(F_(2,57)=.366). As a result, the Fo of adolescent man begins to emerge by age fifteen, It is shown that there is a considerable fall in Fo between ages 11 and 14. For this reason, it can be said that vocal mutation starts from the age of 11. From age 11 to age 16, Fo values among boys lower sharply while those among girls lower gradually. At ages 16 there is a difference in mean Fo of about 74Hz between boys and girls: 165.30Hz(SD 15.92) for boys and 239.66Hz(SD 8.79) for girls. This is called "mutational period". 5. The mean Fo from age of 17 through the 30's is 120.99Hz(SD 7.80), for men and 225.56Hz(SD 8.61) for women. For men, no significant difference is found in the Fo as a function of age(F_(4,119)=.811). For the women, significant difference is found in the Fo as a function of age(F_(4,119)=4.441). A post-hoc Scheffe test revealed significant differences(p<.05) between the Fo data of the 17-year-o1ds and the 30's. 6, Under normal conditions of health, nutrition, and exercise, the human voice is relatively stable over about four decades(up until the age of 59).This is called the middle-age plateau which is assumes certain age-related "deteriorations of the larynx". The mean Fo of subjects aged 40's to 50's shows 129.28Hz(SD 10.08)
