In this study the filling characteristics among the cavities in multi-cavity injection molding have been analyzed. Runner design for filling balance has been studied and novel runner design is also suggested. Small injection molded articles such as lens and mobile product’s parts are usually molded in multi-cavity injection mold. The problem occurred in multi-cavity molding is flow imbalance among the cavities. The flow imbalance affects the dimensions and physical properties of molded articles. First of all, the flow imbalance among the cavities are originated from geometrical imbalance of delivery system such as runner and gate. However, even the geometry of delivery system is well balanced the cavity imbalance is being developed. Among the operational conditions, injection speed is the most significant process variable affecting the filling imbalances in multi-cavity injection molding. Through this study, experimental study of flow imbalance has been conducted for various injection speeds using PC (Polycarbonate) and Zeonex resin. Also, the filling imbalances were compared with CAE results. The dimensions and weights of multi-cavity molded parts were examined. The results showed that the filling imbalances vary according to the injection speeds and resins. In case of PC resin, the inner cavities were filled earlier than outer cavities for any injection speed tested in this study. However in case of Zeonex resin, the outer cavities were filled earlier than the inner cavities at low injection speed. On the other hand, the inner cavities were filled earlier than outer cavities at high injection speed. The physical characteristics such as weight and dimension were different from locations of cavities because of those filling imbalance. Through experiment and CAE analysis, it is concluded that the filling imbalance is derived from temperature distribution in the cross section of runner. New delivery system has been suggested in this study to eliminate flow imbalance problem. Novel runner design which has a helical geometry has been examined by experimentally and theoretically. The results showed that the filling balance varies according to the materials and helical type of runner. Subsequently helical type runner design could eliminate flow imbalance in multi-cavity injection molding.
