The purpose of this study is to review John wood Duke (1899~1984)'s lied, 'From the Sea' in order to find out how to reflect the contents and feelings of a poem into the song and how to express the rhythm effectively to make a beautiful and lovely music. From the beginning of 20th century, the United States made a remarkable growth in lied. The growth of lied became concrete in 1910s with the American poems revival. Many composers began to make lots of lieder and John Duke became one of the most important composers in the America lied history. On the based of the brilliant literary knowledge, the front-runner in the lied, John Duke made 265 works during his life time, most of his works were vocal music using American poems. Lied, 'From the Sea' was originally a poem written by a woman poet, Sara Teasdale(1884~1933) and was composed into 5 songs by John Wood Duke. It became a beautiful and lovely music through the combination of Sara Teasdale's poet, giving a naive, lovely and delicate expression and deep sorrow, and John Duke's art world seeking after the charming and lyrical style. John Duke makes us feel 'From the Sea', as a poem which expresses the beauty of love with the background of the sea, more romantic and lyrical by using simple and comfortable melody. In particular, John Duke gives an emphasis on the relationship between poem and music. So it is easy to find his intention of reflecting the contents and feelings of poem into the 5 songs of 'From the Sea'. For example, to make a clear division, he uses comma, pause and interlude, or to stress the lyrics, he gives various changes in the process of melody, formation, theme(musical motif), musical interval, and range. In addition, he gives a stress on the syllabic relationship of lyrics, and expresses the rhythm of poem using the short phonetic value to the words such as suffix and preposition. Lied can be said as an ideal combination of poem and music. Through that combination, it can not only express the contents of poem fully but also gives a deep impression of more than simple melody. John Duke's effort of expressing the various and wide-ranging composing world gives an great impact on those who research and play his lieder. If, in connection with the relationship between poem and music, the study on the effect of John Duke's works on the other composers were continued, constructive implication for the music development would be given to our music.
