This study set out to examine the dating relationships among high school students and to suggest some effective measures to help them establish desirable directions in their dating relationships and grow up as healthy adolescents with positive values and sound personality. A survey was conducted over 800 girls and boys attending humanities high schools in Cheonan and Asan, Chungnam, Korea. In order to understand their dating relationships and perception of dating relationships, frequency analysis, cross tabulation, and t-test were carried out. The analysis findings were as follows: First, the teens dated their mates once or twice a week(61.40%). Each date lasted one to three hours(57.3%). The places of their dating were usually the theater and park(48.4%). They usually talked about things that came up at the moment(87.4%). They met with their dates by introduction, attending private institutes or studying at a private library(52.7%). The reason for dating was either simple curiosity or boredom(42.1%). And the dating degree involved physical contacts (74.2%). Second, their perception of dating relationships was examined. As a result, they believed that social skills would develop and feel confidence, happiness, and pleasure in everyday life once they were in dating relationships. At the same time, they were aware of side effects of dating such as frequent going out and bad grades. And they didn't believe that dating would lead to their setting goals for future, increased conflicts with their parents, or confusion by sexual curiosity. Third, they were asked about the student counseling and need for welfare programs at school. They would first talk to the parents or their friends when they had difficulty at school or life issues. But 69.1% of the students confided in their friends when they had problems with their dating relationships. Most of student said the school should have a program to reinforce their confidence, increase learning abilities, and educate them about dating relationships and sex(48.9%). Based on the analysis findings, the following suggestions were made for the social welfare at school in terms of policy and practice: they should develop and educate programs about sound dating relationships to change the negative opinions about dating relationships. It is also important to provide the students with various hobby or leisure activity programs with which to resolve their sexual desire in a positive manner. Finally the roles of social workers in school should be expanded to reinforce practical welfare service.
