Variations of Mechanical Properties and Microstructureswith Heat Treatment of Diecast Aluminum alloysJung-Mok Lee Department of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering, Graduate School of Industry, Kumoh National Institute of Technology Abstract High strength alloys are in high demand in mobile phone industry as the state-of-the-art mobile phone has been lighter and slimmer recently than ever. In this study, Al-Mg-Si alloy was studied for the mobile-phone application. Variations of mechanical properties of the aluminum alloy were investigated with age hardening heat treatment. Optical and Electron microscopy were employed to observe the microstructure change during aging. As-cast and as-diecast alloys were solutionized for 24hr at 430℃ or 3hr at 530℃, respectively. Then the alloys were aged for 10min, 1hr, 4hr, 8hr, 12hr, 24hr, 48hr at 150℃ and 250℃, respectively. Maximum hardness was obtained at 4hr and 8hr aging time after solid solution treatment at 430℃, and 4hr aging time after solid solution treatment at 530℃. This hardness change was due to the micro precipitation increase from OM and SEM observations. After the die-casting, the alloy showed higher hardness than one before the die-casting. It might be caused by the structure refinement due to the rapid cooling rate.
