The purpose of this study was to examine how the sustained participation of mentally disabled people in a self-supporting group was affected by their own personal and interpersonal factors, the character- istics of the self-supporting group and social support. It's basically meant to suggest effective intervention methods for self-supporting groups of the mentally disabled and to seek ways of bolstering their continuing self-supporting activities. The subjects in this study were 114 mentally disabled people who joined self-supporting groups at 15 different mental health centers and social rehabilitation facilities in Daejeon and Chungcheong province. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 12.0 program. To evaluate the reliability of the questionnaire, Cronbach alpha coefficient was calculated, and t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression procedures were utilized to address research questions posed in this study. The major findings of the study were as follows: First, the mentally disabled people took part in the self-supporting groups for 20.39 months on the average. The length of their activities ranged from a low of one month to a high of 84 months. In terms of a will to keep joining the groups, they got a mean of 3.80 out of possible five points, which denoted that they had a relatively strong intention to keep joining the groups. Second, as to connections between personal factors and participation sustainability, gender(p<.05), employment(p<.01) and monthly mean income(p<.05) made a statistically significant difference to the length of participation. Those who were female, who had an occupation and whose monthly mean income was 0.5 million won or more continued to take part in the groups for a longer period of time. Third, in regard to links between the structural characteristics of the self-supporting group and participation sustainability, the form of participation(p<.05), the number of participants(p<.01) and participation cost(p<.05) made a significant difference to the length of participation. Those who were employed, whose groups consisted of 10 members and who spent five to less than 10 thousand won on joining the groups continued to take part in for a longer period of time than their counterparts who were unemployed, whose groups included one to five members and who spent less than 50 thousand won. As for relationship between the functional characteristics of the self- supporting groups and participation sustainability, the length of participation had a positive(+) correlation to content satisfaction level. And a will to keep joining the groups had a positive(+) correlation to content satisfaction level and the functional efficiency of the groups. Fourth, concerning connections between interpersonal factors and participation sustainability, there was a negative(-) correlation between a will to keep joining the groups and interpersonal difficulties with the other members, one of the interpersonal factors. It signified that those who faced less difficulties in getting along with the other members had a stronger intention to keep joining the groups. Fifth, as to correlation between social support and participation sustainability, the length of participation had a positive(+) correlation to colleague support and family support, and a will to keep joining the groups was positively(+) correlated to colleague support, family support and expert support. Sixth, in regard to factors affecting the length of participation, the problems with the self-supporting groups(p<.05) and colleague support (p<.01) had a statistically significant impact on that. It implied that less difficulties with the self-supporting groups and stronger colleague support led to a longer participation in the groups. Their intention to keep joining the groups was under the statistically significant influence of employment(p<.05), the functional effectiveness of the groups(p<.05) and colleague support(p<.01). It denoted that those who had a job, whose self-supporting groups were more effective functionally and who were more backed up by colleagues had a stronger intention to keep joining the groups.
