A device using high voltage and a method using asphalt mold are applied in the density management of roads after casting asphalt at roadwork sites in Korea. These methods require a new density measuring system because of defects such as the increase of error rates due to water or the destruction of constructed roads. A density measuring method processed through the interaction between radioisotopes and radioactive substances is used in foreign countries. However, it was difficult to apply in Korea since the method uses high radioactivity up to several tens of mCi.
Therefore, this study calculated important variables in the design of measuring equipment such as the radiation source, distance and location of the measuring instrument with an MCNP program using the Monte Carlo methodology. A method for dividing the density by level was also investigated.
A back-scattering method was chosen instead of trasmittion method as a basic conceptional design in order to measure the roads which construction was completed in a nondestructive way. As for the radioactive isotope, ^(60)Co source was selected. Once decayed, the ^(60)Co source radiates gamma rays of 1.17 MeV and 1.33 MeV at a rate of 1:1. This indicates that the amount of gamma rays reacting with asphalt increases compared to other sources.
2"×2" NaI (Tl) scintillation counter was used as the measuring device, and a lead shield was applied in order to block the radiation directly discharged from the radiation source. According to the results of MCNP calculation, the largest measurement structure could be formed when the thickness of the lead shield was 10 cm, distance between the source and lead shield was 18 cm, and the distance between the lead shield and measuring device was 2.5 cm.
A collimator was designed as a method for independently dividing the density of the upper layer from the asphalt density in the lower layer, depending on the depth of the intended upper layer. The collimator angle was set as 21.80° within the basic measuring equipment structure to measure the 4 cm-deep outer layer. Statistical repetitive practices confirmed that the upper layer density could be divided independently from the lower layer density when designing the collimator, in case the asphalt density is calculated from 2.0 g/㎤ to 3.0 g/㎤ with an interval of 0.2 g/㎤.
The measurements calculated through the MCNP code in this study are results from ideal conditions. We must also consider several other variables through future measurement experiments. A correction formula reflecting the physical half life of radioactive isotopes and variables that influence surrounding environments including the asphalt temperature during measurement should be derived as well as an adjustment coefficient through this formula.
