Background: The electrocardiographic test is known as a useful diagnostic test of hyperkalemia, but in some studies patients with reduced renal function, which do not appear in a typical electrocardiographic changes, are reported. The objective of this study is to discuss the usefulness of electrocardiographic test in hyperkalemic patients with chronic kidney function. Methods: The 102 patients (Male/ Female: 59/ 43, the average age of 57 years old) who were diagnosed as having hyperkalemia in the emergency room of Kyunghee Medical Center took part in the study. Information about electrocardiographic tests and clinical data was obtained by reviewing the medical records of the patients. Results: The comparison and analysis of three groups (39 patients of acute renal failure, 38 patients with stage 3 or 4 chronic renal disease, and 25 patients with hemodialysis) in terms of the usefulness of electrocardiographic changes are obtained. The significant differences are not found in the electrocardiographic findings, such as reduced or absent P wave, PR interval prolongation, QRS complex widening, and tall T wave in three groups. Conclusion: The electrocardiographic test is useful to diagnose hyperkalemia in patients with chronic kidney disease.
