Recently, the environmental problems in Mongolia are becoming more and more serious and that has set an obstacle to progress of the country. The urgent and critical sources of trouble are soil devastation, desertification and the destruction of an ecosystem. Mongolia used to be a country preserving natural environment and holding abundant natural resources, but it has attracted many investors for the economic development. That developing policies have allowed improper ways to use the nature and to develop the mining industry, and that resulted in devastation of nature and environmental pollution. The Mongolian government has been promoting bilateral and multilateral cooperations for improving the situations, and especially it has tried to make bilateral partners. However, considering that environmental issues are difficult to solve out of one country's effort, the more participants in the efforts for the better environment, the more effective the processes of solving them are.
As geographically, Mongolia is located in the Northeast Asia, the environmental problems in Mongolia fall on all the countries in this area. In other words, Mongolia and the other countries in Northeast Asia are sharing the worsening environmental situations, and desertification and yellow dust, the most grave problems, are being discussed at the meetings for environmental cooperations in the Northeast Asia.
This thesis focuses on the efforts to lessen desertification and yellow dust through the cooperations of countries in the Northeast Asia to solve the environmental problems in Mongolia. It starts with theories and the characteristics of Mongolia proving that multilateral cooperations can lead to better results than bilateral cooperations; the country has a small size of people in the large area of seven times as the size of the Korean peninsula, geopolitically it is located between powerful countries, China and Russia and it has a continental climate. Secondly, trying to find solutions to improve multilateral cooperations, I searched the environmental problems in Northeast Asia and Mongolia to show the close relationship among the countries. Lastly, I compared and evaluated the results between multilateral and bilateral cooperations and could get the conclusion that current environmental problems in Mongolia can not be easily solved by bilateral cooperations. Though it has tried to drive that type of cooperations, in the long run, we should move on to multilateral cooperations in the Northeast Area. The environmental cooperations among Korea, Japan and China should be extended including Mongolia, North Korea and Russia in the Northeast Asia and that is going to make us expect more effective and better results in the efforts to solve the environmental problems in the area.
