The first study of active noise control was suggested in 1936. The noise cancellation was tried by making another noise signal with the same amplitude of the original noise signal and with phase difference by 180° and by interfering and offsetting each other. Then, development of semiconductor technology and processing skills solved earlier problems, to some extent, such as the limit of the analog system and the lack of optimal control algorithm. New ways and algorithm also contributed to the speed and performance. Recently, more developed technology and algorithm have got the active noise control system to work.
The noise signal has all characteristics from linear and non-linear to stationary and non-stationary. However, its linear and stationary characters have only been considered in previous studies, and ways and algorithm suitable for these features have been studied. The existing technology of active noise control has its performative limit in getting rid of noise because it did not consider the noise signal's non-linear and non-stationary properties.
This dissertation embodies Active Noise Control (ANC) by using Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) to analyze and process non-linear and non-stationary signals as well as linear and stationary ones.
The traditional ANC system used an adaptive or Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter and followed algorithm such as Least Mean Square (LMS) to interfere and offset as many noise signals as possible. The conservative system has shown its limit in processing and clearing noise signals involving non-linear and non-stationary features.
The ANC system using the HHT suggested in the present study generates Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF) after going through Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD). This system's algorithm runs the HHT on the generated IMF, controls the frequency resulting from the Hilbert transform, generates another signal with the same amplitude of the original noise signal and with phase difference by 180°, interferes the original signal, and offsets the two signals, and gets rid of them. The HHT was studied by Norden E. Huang et al. in 1998 and used in the ANC system of this paper.
This study suggests two types of algorithm in embodying the ANC system. One type has access to a noise signal, undergoes the EMD, generates the IMF, predicts the present condition on the basis of the analysis of past signals in the time-domain, generates another signal, interfere the original one, and offset the two signals. The other has access to a noise signal, undergoes the EMD, generates the IMF, predicts the present condition based on the analysis of past signals in the frequency-domain, generates another signal, and interfere the original one, and offset the two signals.
When it comes to the two types of algorithm, the study conducted an experiment and a performance evaluation using Matlab. The results show that the two types of algorithm are almost like efficient compared with the algorithm in the conservative ANC system. It is the first attempt using Hilbert-Huang transform for active noise control. It is showed that the algorithm suggested in the present study is comparable with the existing ANC in processing all those characteristics of the noise from linear/non-linear to stationary/non- stationary and canceling noise. It needs the continuos study that processing speed and performance are improved in near future.
