This study is about change in Korean film culture resulting from the development of the Internet, and was conducted through examining how the cultural aspect of films and the pattern of communication between films and watchers have been changed with the development of the Internet. It investigated cases of changes in film culture caused by the development of the Internet and conducted a questionnaire survey, and compared the results with previous research and empirical surveys. We reviewed the theoretical concept of the Internet and its correlation with films, and attempted to answer the research question “How does the Internet communicate with film culture?” First, we classified changes in communication between films and watchers appearing with the development of the Internet and resultant changes in film culture into three categories change in the word of mouth pattern; change in the watching pattern; and change in the feedback of films and watchers and investigated previous research and cases. Second, the three types of changes in film culture identified through the empirical questionnaire survey were statistically analyzed, and the results were compared with previous research. Third, the current state of film culture in the Internet age and netizens’ communication with films were empirically compared. Fourth, it was examined whether the consciousness of film watchers who enjoy film culture in the Internet age was established right, and problems in Korean film culture were identified through empirical analysis of change in Korean film culture in the Internet age and solutions were suggested. For comparative study, we surveyed using a questionnaire how film watchers feel change in Korean film culture resulting from the development of the Internet, and investigated change in the word of mouth pattern, change in the watching pattern, and change in the feedback of films and watchers. This study used a questionnaire survey in order to examine how films communicate with watchers through the medium of the Internet and how the communication pattern affected film culture. The questionnaire was designed to empirically survey sub cultures that can communicate with films on the Internet through quantitatively asking about online offline communication with films on the Internet by university students in their 20s who use the Internet. The survey was conducted for 15 days from the 15th to 30th of October by distributing the questionnaires to students at Chongju University and recovering them. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed and 393 of them were recovered. Excluding 13 questionnaires replied insincerely, we used 380 questionnaires as analysis data for this study. According to the results of statistical analysis of the questionnaires, change in communication between watchers and films resulted in dysfunctions such as the decline of reliability of film information caused by fabricated Internet film reviews, copyright infringement through illegal film download, decrease in the number of moviegoers, the collapse of the DVD market as a follow up film channel rather than eufunctions such as the maximization of word of mouth advertisement, convenience of watching films without going to a movie theater, and watchers’ prompt feedback through two way communication. We hope that the dysfunctions of Korean film culture identified through this study and the suggested solutions for the problems may promote constructive and healthy communication between films and watchers on the Internet.
