When a continuous liquid sample introduction is used at glow discharge plasma operated under low pressure, it is possible to connect with separation techniques such as liquid chromatograph and electrophoresis, etc. In general, however, the pressure is being unstable when liquid sample introduces into the low pressure plasma. To solve this problem, new continuous flow sample introduction method should be developed without affecting the plasma.
In this study, we developed a new liquid sample introduction method, as we call a ‘Flow-Cell’. It consist of a concentric nebulizer and a capillary(tens of ㎛). First of all, we optimized the introducing conditions such as a gas flow rate, the pumping speed, and the pressure of the discharge cell. And then, we investigated the feature of the emission spectrum as placing the capillary certain places, where plasma is produced. ‘Flow-Cell’ serves to introduce analyte particles into a SIP for desolvation, vaporization, atomization and excitation. We observe the mass spectrum of inorganic(CdCl2:1000ppm) and organic(dichlormethane, benzene, acetone and toluene) compounds by adjusting the SPI current. In addition, we created the calibration curve of toluene(0.1∼100~%).
In the conclusion, liquid sample can be introduced to the glow discharge plasma with better stability. So, we are going to observe the mass spectrum of inorganic and organic compounds by adjusting the discharge current. Also, we can believe that the new sample introduction technique will be contribute to connect SPI-MS with separation techniques.
