High dynamic range (HDR) visual data require a big amount of storage space and transmission bandwidth, due to its capability of capturing a real scene. Therefore, new schemes are needed in order to display them on the conventional display devices or transmit them over networks. In this thesis, to address these problems, we propose a novel tone-mapping scheme of HDR video sequences and a lossy compression algorithm based on the state-of-the-art H.264/AVC standard. A gradient domain tone mapping algorithm is proposed to display HDR video sequences on conventional low dynamic range (LDR) devices in this thesis. The proposed algorithm obtains a pixel-wise motion vector field and incorporates the motion information into the Poisson equation. Then, by attenuating large spatial gradients, the proposed algorithm can yield a high-quality tone-mapped result without flickering artifacts. For HDR video compression, we separate an HDR video sequence into a tone-mapped LDR sequence and a ratio sequence. Then, those two sequences are encoded using an H.264/AVC codec. During the encoding, we allocate the limited bit budget to the LDR sequence and the ratio sequence optimally to maximize the qualities of those sequences. The ratio sequence is filtered to remove high frequency components, and then prediction modes and motion vectors are encoded selectively for each macroblock to improve coding efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides better performance than the conventional methods.
