The purpose of this study was to test and analyze the effects of the mechanical properties and structural changes of the austenitized and tempered martensite STS 420J2 stainless steel containing 11.5~18% Cr and 0.15~1.2% C on its temper embrittlement. The martensite STS 420J2 stainless steel is used specially for the parts requiring proper corrosion resistance, toughness, strength, wear resistance and fatigue strength. The martensite structure is formed through austenitizing and quenching. This material is used primarily for valves, kitchen knives, medical instruments, steam turbine wings, dies, corrosion-resistant bearings and wear-resisting chemical industry parts. In particular, STS 420J2 is recognized as good stainless steel because its hardness after quenching is HRC50 or higher and its corrosion resistance is very high, and therefore, it is widely used for various structures and parts an even fishing needles requiring high corrosion resistance, strength and hardness. The test was designed to examine how STS 420J2 would be worn out when it was used for the parts of the chain pumping out the sludges at the sewage terminal plant - particularly, the contact points between parts and then, research into the mechanism whereby the STS 420J2 parts reacted to various contaminants to corrode and embrittle earlier. To this end, the researcher austenitized the STS 420J2 stainless steel test pieces for each 3 hours at 960℃, 1000℃ and 1040℃ and then, tempered them for 2~12 hours at 350℃, 450℃, 500℃, 550℃ and 600℃ known as the intervals vulnerable to temper embrittlement to observe the changes of their structures and mechanical properties. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; In case autenitizing was insufficient due to lower temperature of thermal treatment for solution, unsolved carbides and ferrites remained in the structure after quenching, which meant that the parts could wear out and corrode to embrittle at the room temperature. On the other hand, since the STS 420J2 stainless steel has the hardness of HRC55 or higher after oil quenching, it is recommended to temper it at a temperature avoiding the interval 400~550℃ vulnerable to temper embrittlement. According to the results of the test, if the material was tempered at 500℃ or higher, its hardness would decrease rapidly, which meant that it could not well be used for the parts requiring high wear resistance. However, if the tempering temperatures were maintained for 2 hours or more, any rapid decrease of hardness and strength was not observed. It was judged that corrosion resistance was good at the low tempering temperature of 350℃ or lower, but the higher the tempering temperature was, corrosion resistance was lower, which was attributable primarily to deficiency of Cr due to eduction of Cr carbides. It had been expected that the higher the austenitizing temperature was, the crystallized grains would grow to make the material more vulnerable to temper embrittlement, but it was observed that at the austenitizing temperature of 1040℃, Cr was completely solved at the base. Namely, when tempering was performed at the interval vulnerable to temper embrittlement, the impact value did not drop but toughness rather increased rapidly. It was judged that such results had been attributable to the fact that the Cr carbides educted at the base were evenly distributed not only at the grain boundaries but also within the grains to relieve the temper embrittlement. According to the results of the test, austenitizing temperatures for STS 420J2 might differ depending on distribution and forms of carbides as well as processing conditions, and its mechanical properties could improve at the interval of temper embrittlement. This study described the results of the test by austenitizing temperature and analyzed mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and temper embrittlement of the martensite STS 420J2 stainless steel depending on its autenitizing conditions.
