This study will look into Wesley's spirituality with the focus on its other-centeredness in attempt to point out the importance of spiritual education which educates the post-modern generation recognize their egocentrism and lead an other-centered lifestyle. First of all, since it is rather common to see cases where the term spirituality is used without a firm comprehension of its meaning, it is necessary to establish the basic meaning of the term to help lay Christians have better understanding. As Tack-Joe Kwon has stated, spirituality is the core of Christian life that prioritizes having a healthy relationship with God while living in a harmony with neighbours and trying to follow the way of Christ in Holy Spirit through the Bible. However, it is important to note that not everything that is being called as ‘Christian Spirituality’ is in fact flawless. There are two types of spirituality: the true spirituality which is the other-centered spirituality seeking the way of Christ, and the abnormal spirituality which is the spirituality based on egocentrism. Other-centeredness mentioned in here is referring to being both Christ-centered and altruistic. Every human being thinks and behaves out of their egocentric needs, thus spiritual education is necessary if other-centered way of living is to be achieved. As the goal of spiritual education is to bring a change in the human self, both spirituality and self have been examined together. Spirituality more or less depends on the context of self, and the religious, psychological and biblical perspectives all have acknowledged the human self in terms of the old-self and the new-self. The true spirituality means transforming an old-self into a new-self, thus one needs to deny or defeat his or her old-self which behaves according to the impulsive bodily desires and must learn to lead a other-centered life with a new-self. It has been emphasized that spiritual education needs to regard the Bible as its fundamental material, and spiritual education and the Holy Spirit have been studied together for the fact that work of the Holy Spirit is necessary in addition to individual's effort to redirect one's life into the way of Christ. Since Wesley was one of the people in the Church history who led the other-centered spirituality, current study will examine his works and other documents collected by theologians in attempt to illuminate his spirituality with the focus of its other-centered nature. For Wesley, the purpose of spirituality was to follow the commandment of loving God and other people. He believed one should look up to Christ in the Holy Spirit and pursue perfection, even though humans might have sinful natures which have not yet been resolved. This approach, seen from the Other-Centeredness perspective, could provide a remedy sufficient for the modern generation. To achieve Christians' Perfection and Sacralization, which is the purpose of achieving spirituality, Wesley 1) pray for a life that is Christ-centered and altruistic, 2) realize from the Bible that Christ led a joyous altruistic life, 3) experience God's grace through worships which pastors and lay believers deliver together and 4) understood that spirituality through praying, worshipping and bible study is always brought to fruition by the passion of preaching in anywhere possible. This study attempts to suggest Wesley's spirituality as an excellent model for today's Christians whose common misbelief is that only personal spirituality exist. It is important for pastorates to establish solid ground and direction for the other-centered spirituality to be realized by examining Wesley's individual as well as communal spiritual education. Further studies of historical figures as part the other-centered spirituality research are expected for proper spiritual education in the future.
