TOXICITY OF PESTICIDES ON THE HONEYBEE, APIS MELLIFERA L., AND SAFETY GUIDELINE IN APPLE ORCHARDS :

Pesticides sprayed in apple orchards especially at blooming time intimidate successful pollination by reducing pollinators and cause yield loss as well as disturb the ecosystem. An important pollinating agent of the apple flowers, we tested the pesticide toxicity against honeybee Apis mellifera L.
In this study, 63 synthetic pesticides mostly used by apple growers were tested in laboratory to estimate oral and contact toxicities. The laboratory results showed that most fungicides have less than 25% bee mortality at their recommend concentration. Among 12 acaricides, two organophosphates were hazardous and the others showed low toxicities. Among 35 insecticides, twenty one (organophosphate, carbamate, pyrethroid, antibiotic and neonicotinoid) had hazardous effect but 14 insecticides showed low toxicity.
After screening the pesticides in the laboratory on the basis of toxicity, 16 most toxic pesticides were selected for field testing. Most chemicals caused 100% mortality within 24 hr of direct spray except acequinocyl (36%) and fenarimol (10%) in the field. Fumigation effect was measured by exposing honeybees to chemicals at 1, 12, 24, 48 hr after treatment (HAT). In 1 HAT, 100% mortalities were observed for most chemicals except acequinocyl (16%), amitraz (84%), and fenarimol (3.2%). However, in 24 HAT, most chemicals showed lower than 25% mortalities except methomyl (30%) and dichlorvos (35.6%). In 48 HAT, honeybee mortalities from fumigation were lower than 10%. Residual toxicity of the pesticides were also estimated in the field to be 44 - 70 hr and 46 - 122 hr for times to kill 50% and 25% honeybee population, respectively. Based on this study, acequinocyl and fenarimol are relatively safe in the field, even though they were highly toxic in the laboratory study.
Another experiment was conducted to detect an avoidance tendency of the honeybee against sprayed pesticides. The laboratory results showed that cyhexatine, carbosulfan and fenpyroximate caused high avoidance tendency (0.08, 0.09 and 0.10) while diflubenzuron, tebufenpyrad and acrinathrin had low avoidance tendency (0.37, 0.36 and 0.34). Most acaricides and fungicides were also avoided by honeybee. In the field, the avoidance tendency was measured by releasing honeybees at 2, 3, 4, 8, 9 and 10 days after spray treatment. Few density (2.67) honey bees visited the flowers sprayed with abamectin while relatively and high density (18.33) was observed in fenarimol treatment at the 2 days after spray. In the 2 days after spray, fewer numbers (3.0 and 3.67) of honeybees were found in abamectin and fenthion treatment but more numbers of honeybees (21 and 20.33) were observed in difulbenzuron and carbaryl treatment. The avoidance tendencies of honeybees against tested chemicals in the field were well correlated with the ones estimated from the laboratory. Taken together, this study suggests a safety guideline of pesticide for apple production by protecting pollinating behavior of honeybees.
