The firms only-domestic market-orientated are little possibility of survival for the global competition of 21 century. To survive, the firms should make their strategy suitable for global trend. The rapid globalization is creating new challenges for global market-orientated firms.
The most important factor in firm's foreign market entry is to carefully analyze its local market environments such as politics, economy, society and culture. And the firms then enter the market with proper investment strategy. The firms have to consider several factors such as firm-specific, industry-specific, locational-specific and business-specific factors which can influence on deciding foreign market entry modes. After that, the firms have to select most effective entry mode which is best-fitted for themselves among export, international contract and foreign portfolio/direct investment.
The Chinese economy had recorded its high annual growth rate of 7-10% since from the start of reform and open policy of 1978 to 1990. Despite of global foreign currency crisis, China is still growing fast and many Multinational-firms are tapping at the Chinese market.
But recently the Chinese government is strengthening its environment-pollution regulations to achieve sustainable development. Accordingly, the firms entering the China should consider building their environment-friendly management system and produce environment- friendly commodities to succeed in the future. The firms have to investigate the factors of opportunities and threats through careful market research.
This study investigates successful entry cases of the Korean firms in Chinese market and analyzes factors of their success. Analysis case are the Anycall of Samsung Electronics Company, E-Mart, the Chocopie of Orion. After investigating motivations of entry and current situations, I then accomplish SWOT (Strength - Weakness - Opportunities - Threats) analysis and localization strategy for the cases. As a result, I suggest the desirable strategies for the entry in Chinese market as follows:
First, it is essential to introduce the new products embodied in competitive core technology in China and give creative images to Chinese.
Second, it is important to make through researches for markets to find niche markets and consumers for market following firms. It is also important to have proper marketing strategy.
Third, China is broad for territory and is diverse for consumers and it is therefore necessary to have a market segmentation or concentration strategy to penetrate Chinese market effectively. After segmenting the market in terms of city, level of income, gender and age, it is important to focus on target market and concentrate on marketing competences on them.
Fourth, it is likely to fail to just apply Korean-style management system without adaptation in China. Accordingly, it is required to take the localization strategy to understand Chinese culture.
In the future, it would rather be desirable to take strategy to sell environment-friendly and high-value added products than to produce and export low-value added products with low wages in China market. To have a successful entry in China, I suggest that firms must recognize the importance of localization strategy and carefully investigate about the management environments of China.
