Idioms and proverbs are livelihood languages that are made through the effects of cultural social backgrounds. Lots of them have long histories, so to understand them we must understand the culture and their ethnicity. A lot of Korean people think that Japanese has a lot of common grammars used in their language so it is easier to learn than other languages. However between the sentences or phrases used commonly, lots of them are unexplainable using grammar and logic. Moreover some idioms and proverbs use words different than its original meaning. As a result it is very hard for foreigners to use idioms and proverbs in a natural conversation, but using these phrases will make the communication go much smoother, and transfer the wanted information more clearly. So it is necessary to learn these idioms and proverbs from the beginning.
For these reasons this study will compare textbooks used in Korea's universities and those used in elementary school in Japan. This comparison will figure out if the contents that are used in Korea is recommendable, or if it lacks the standard. Also comparison will take place about which level of the idioms and proverbs are in Korea university's textbook. This is to make a basis in teaching Japanese in Korea.
The idioms used in Korea university's textbook are much less than those in Japan elementary school's textbooks showing 6.9% of Japan's textbook. This is about 20% of idioms that are used in elementary school grade 1, 2, 3 textbooks. Also comparing the 4 normal textbooks used in Korea (Beginner, Intermediate, Expert level each) the Beginner textbook well match the level of grade 1 and 2 (84.3%). However it shows that the intermediate level, and expert level doesn't match the grade 3, 4 or grade 5, 6 textbooks' idiom level, each showing 40.7% and 41.5% match ratio. Like the result the idioms used in university textbooks are much lesser than Japan elementary school's textbook. Also it was found that more idioms were in normal textbooks than university textbook, although it had a limit that the idioms used were only about the level of grade 1, 2, 3 textbooks in Japan. This is because normal textbooks are classified by levels so people can learn systematically, and unlike university textbooks it often focuses on normal conversations and newspaper articles for students to learn various vocabulary.
The 4 normal textbooks had similar idioms compared to Japan's elementary school textbooks, however university textbooks were about the level of Beginner level normal textbooks. Like this university textbooks have a problem in the quantity of idioms and proverbs and also in diversity. Expecially some of the university textbooks use only one or two idioms through out the whole textbook. Improvements should be made to these textbooks.
It seems that university textbooks should be rewritten or filled with more various idioms so students can at least learn idioms that are in Japan's grade 4, 5 elementary schools or in intermediate level of normal Japanese textbooks.
