This study was carried out on the assumption that contrary to the habitual use and usefulness of atopic cosmetics as an adjuvant therapeutic agent, consumers' satisfaction with it has a correlation with its identity. In order to find out the correlation, a questionnaire survey of atopic patients who went to hospital regularly was carried out centering on the purchase pattern and satisfaction with atopic cosmetics. 350 questionnaires were distributed to 45 clinics and hospitals in Seoul and Gyonggi areas over the period from November 4 to 10, 2008. The staff (head persons, nurses, and managers) was requested to fill the questionnaire with atopic patients. Collected data of 123 reponses were statistically processed at the Data Statistics Institute at Chung-Ang University. As the results of the questionnaire survey show, atopic dermatitis patients regard atopic cosmetics as an essential adjuvant therapeutic agent and use it routinely to improve their atopic skin. They do not put trust in commercial advertisement and go to doctors or pharmacists with confused viewpoints on advertised products. And they show the tendency of purchasing it on the recommendation of certified specialists such as doctors and pharmacists in general. As the correlation analysis on the basis of the chi-square test shows, the satisfaction with the adjuvant agents is correlated with the understanding level of commercial advertisement, the experience of side effects, and the recognizant extent of safety and effect. And in the depth of their distrust in atopic cosmetics, there is the difficulty in understanding the product information. In this vein, if correct and comprehensible information on products is provided to them, the risky factors of side effects can be removed and atopic patients' satisfaction with the products will be improved. So, to provide correct information on products is a shortcut to make atopic patients select an atopic cosmetic appropriately. In consideration of a chronic and relapsing character of atopic skin, the functional product that improves atopic skin is not a drug but a cosmetic from the aspects that it reduces the side effects of drug, can be purchased easily, must be used for an extended period continuously, has the effects of prevention, improves pruritus, and restores skin barriers. The standpoint of painful atopic patients is estranged from the existing cosmetics. Therefore, atopic patients who find difficulty selecting cosmetics must have an appropriate way to understand product information more correctly via such governmental policies as groping after a more realistic management system of cosmeceuticals, systematizing the functional items that improve atopic skin, and rationalizing the regulation of item advertizement. If an atopic cosmetic establishes its identity as a cosmetic, cosmetologists are motivated to develop new products more earnestly and actively. And their efforts could generate more effective atopic cosmetics and distressing atopic patients will be provided with a substantial help.
