Maurice Ravel was one of the popular composers from the end of 19 century to the beginning of 20 century, and his pieces was characteristic of impressionism techniques and neoclassical music that has a solid form, of clear melody and rhythm, which had great effect on French modern songs. He showed that he had an open-minded inclination to admit various musical forms from Renaissance music to jazz music. He who was a great master didn't left lots of pieces because of his perfectionism, but those interested musical critics and were great issues among them. Before describing this, I studied documents of the history of French songs, French musical aspects and social conditions from the end of 19 century to the beginning of 20 century, Ravel's life and the characteristic of his opuses, and a comparative study of Debussy and Ravel as theoretical backgrounds. His musical characteristic is based on the Spanish emotion, especially the atmosphere of dance music. Three song cycles also involves the Spanish emotion in the paper, and these are based on guajira, zorzica, jota which have Spanish dance music rhythm. The first song, [Chanson romanesque] has six-eight time and three-four time by turns each other, which is the characteristic of the Spanish dance music rhythm. The second song, [Chanson e'pique] has religious atmosphere which has parallel 6/4 chords at the beginning part and is Basque dance music based on the zorzica's rhythm. The last song, [Chanson a` boire] is a song to offer wine, which is based on the three time of the jota rhythm involved in vocalist's waggish portamento, and it is finished with toasting to joy of life lively. The purpose of this paper is analysis and study of three song cycles which were Ravel's the last vocal songs, and I hope that this would be used as a material of practical performance.
