The purpose of the study is to devise the effective countermeasures to improve the water quality of Gyeongancheon by investigating and analyzing its landscape changes and water quality in the environmental geographical aspects. In order to devise comprehensive countermeasures, this study focused on keeping track of the drainage network changes, the land use changes and the water pollutants of Gyeongancheon flowing into Paldang Reservoir for water supply sources in Seoul City and Gyeonggi Province. With the purpose to analyze the landscape changes of Gyeongancheon as well as to assess the pollutants and the degree of water pollution, this study investigated the area covering the various range of Seongnam, Yangpyung, Suwon and Yongin Cities and Counties according to topographical map of 1:50,000 scale issued by National Geographic Information Institute. Also, analysis was conducted through the topographical maps, geological maps, numerical maps and the air photographs according to the times as follows : 1930s, 1960s, 1980s and the current age. In addition, the investigation came with the bibliographical work on this subject, the region visiting and the interviews with the residents living in the areas. After comprehensive examination of the environmental geographical changes around Gyeongancheon, this study suggests the ideas to improve the water quality of Gyeongancheon. According to the analysis of the drainage network changes of Gyeongancheon through the times, there was not much changes of the stream flowing into Paldang Reservoir but the bank construction and the distribution of towns appeared around Gyeongancheon. With the aspects of land use near Gyeongancheon, the distribution of towns and communities has dramatically increased as the population has grown since 1990s while the number of arable lands, forests and grasslands has decreased. These activities results in the acceleration of the pollution of Gyeongancheon. When it comes to the pollution sources of Gyeongancheon, both point source pollutant and non-point source pollutant are increasing. As for point source pollutant, there was tremendous increase of living sewage caused by the increase of population, sewage caused by livestock raising, industrial sewage from the industrialization and a lack of separating system between drain and sewage pipes. Non-point source pollutant generated by rapid urbanization is also increasing: there is a growing construction of towns and roads. As a result, while the quantity of Gyeongancheon flowing into Paldang Reservoir is not more than 1.6%, the pollution level reaches to 16% amount. Living sewage caused by population growth accounts for much of the pollutants of Gyeongancheon and the influx of pollutant from the ground, non-point source pollutant, is the next. To control point source pollution, infrastructures for the environment such as an end-point sewage facility are needed to be constructed immediately. And to reduce non-point source pollutant, a reduction facility should be expanded and otherwise, it is necessary to develop marshy land for high quality of water as well as restoration to the ecological river which has better self purification capacity. So far, water pollution has been tackled, centering on a point source pollutant. But, there must be a limit on improvement of water quality unless the adequate and prompt measures over non-point source pollutant are taken, which plays considerable major role in water pollution. Even though Sustainable Structured Wetland Biotope, which has already been made at Geumeo stream and is supposed to be made at five areas of the upper Gyeongancheon, might have a positive effect on the improvement of water quality of its stream in which the pollution level is serious, its wetland disturbs the mainstream flow of Gyeongancheon, so that the water level rises dramatically and the damage caused by a flood increases, especially in South Korea where the river overflows annually. So, it is desirable to meander the mainstream of the river and use its hydropower in order to improve the water quality, in that Gyeongancheon valley located on the gneiss region. Also, although wetland ecological park located in the lower Gyeongancheon and the planned wetland construction is likely to improve the water quality of the intersection between Lake Paldang and Gyeongancheon, residents living and making a living in these area seem to be deprived of their ground of living. So, it is primary to consider the measures for securing the foundation for peasants to make a living. The wetland and aquatic plant cultivation island in Lake Paldang should be preserved in that they play important role in improving the water quality. On the other hand, careless use of pesticides in the region of Lake Paldang is contaminating the river. For the more advanced regulating system it is necessary to use kinds of eco-friendly agricultural method in the area of Lake Paldang should be established as soon as possible in that contaminant of the area flows into Lake Paldang directly. In addition, land purchasing project implemented by Han River affiliated institutes under the Ministry of Environment should be designed to be ‘First ecological restoration plan, next buying related land’, so that the water side areas, zones need to be developed into the grass wetland, and land discharging great quantity of pollutants can be purchased without any difficulty. In conclusion, due to urbanization and industrialization, a number of population has increased and caused the change of the land use and landscape of Gyeongancheon. Furthermore, population growth near Gyeongancheon has aggravated pollution and it seriously affects Paldang Reservoir. In order to improve the water quality of Gyeongancheon, expansion of basic environmental facility, restoration of ecological river, and constructing wetland on the lower reach of Gyeongancheon or keeping the existing wet land in good condition are required. Gyeongancheon will become more clean and fresh if it is well restored like natural river. Along with managing the river under the ecology guideline, residents in the area should do their best to preserve the regional environments around Gyeongancheon.
