This study aims to look into how the high school freshman mathematic underachievers understand the variable through the LOGO programming activity by watching the process and find out changes in the understanding of variable concept. For this, the following research questions were established. 1. How do the high school freshman mathematic underachievers understand the concept of variables through the LOGO programming activity? To solve the research question, an induced, investigative research that focuses on the process rather than the result was used. For the research, 2 female students from K High School located in Gimhae City of Gyeongnam Province were chosen and interviewed before the experiment to seize their understanding level of variable concept. Afterwards for approximately 2 weeks, total of 6 sessions in LOGO programming activities were processed to see their understanding of variable concept, and the interviews and tests were carried out to gain data which were analyzed. The results are as follows. First, before the LOGO programming activity, after finding out the female students' understanding of variable concept, it was difficult to say that they understood correctly about the text use and variable concept. Regarding the ‘variable’, the students regarded it in the same light as ‘unknown quantity’, and they dimly came up with situations when they learned equations and functions instead of examples of using variables. This signifies that they are not aware of the fact that ‘variable’ is another name of changing object which is the true nature of polyvalent name. Secondly, the understanding level of students that appeared during the LOGO programming activity was analyzed with the Sutherland(1987)'s 7 categories of analyzing the understanding level of variable concept. As a result, on the questions "Do you accept the idea of variable?" and "Do you understand the variable names of voluntariness?", the students naturally understand the variables during the process of naming which is the characteristics of the LOGO programming language. Also, on the question "Do you understand that two different variables may have the same value?" and the meaning of variable as a polyvalent name, through the process of drawing and verifying the figures, the students entered various numbers into the appointed variable and were able to understand that different forms were made. In addition, on the question "Do you understand that the variable indicates the range of numbers?", the students used to think that the values of variables were only limited to integers and positive numbers, but through LOGO activity, they were able to face prime number usage therefore learning that variables were able to use not only integers and positive numbers but also prime numbers; and this led to naturally expanding the codomain of variables. On the question "Do you use the variable to formulize in generalized methods?", the students put 360/n as the variable in the process of drawing equilateral polygons which naturally led to the generalization while finding the size of exterior angle. This shows that in the environment with computer, the necessity of formalization could be adopted by the interaction between the students and the environment. Thirdly, the students’ understanding level of variable concept did not show the same aspects by the 7 categories, respectively. 'Acceptance of lack of closure' was a concept that was already held by the students before the activity therefore this was irrelevant category. On the other hand, the category "Do you understand the quadratic relation between the two formulas?" was seem to be difficult for the students even after the activity. Although the students were not able to show organized and logical thinking, they were able to approach easily on analyzing and comparing the relations between the two formulas through LOGO activity. Fourth, to see how much change took place after the LOGO programming activity, a variable concept test and interview took place. This was also to learn about other parts that weren't looked after during the research. Conclusively, the students showed excellent understanding of variable concept in various angles after the LOGO programming activity. In that process, it is found that there was a large effect made from not only the LOGO activity itself, but also the interaction with the environment where LOGO activity is done - that is, the environment with the communication between the students or between students and teachers and with computer. Thanks to the adequate intervention of the teacher, the students were able to deeply concentrate on the meaning and roles of variables in the LOGO situation. As a result, the students were able to understand the variable concept in various angles, and it could be seen that they gained hope and expectations on their future mathematics education. Therefore, it can be said that even though the student is a mathematics underachiever, the LOGO activity has positive influences on understanding of variable concept in mathematics learning.
