The Effects of Discussion Activities using Picture Books on the Young Children's Moral reasoning and Language Ability원문보기

This paper aimed at analyzing the effect of discussing conflict situations in picture books on a young child's moral reasoning and language ability. Early childhood is the time period which serves as the foundation during which a young child's sense of moral develops and language skills improve rapidly. Hence, proper moral and language education during this period may be very important. However, despite such importance of the matter, there has been little research regarding instruction by using picture books in relation to a young child's moral reasoning and language abilities. In order to accomplish the purpose of this study, a total of 60 children aged 7, attending Y kindergarten and S kindergarten in Seoul, were divided into two groups. The first thirty represented the experimental group and the remaining thirty the control group. The experimental group carried out discussions on conflict situations using picture books and the control group engaged in story-telling using pictures books. Both groups participated in a total of 12 sessions -- two sessions per week over a six-week period. Kim Jung-joon's translated and revised version on the method of examining distributive justice reasoning from Damon's 'Social/Moral Interview for Young Children' was used to measure the moral reasoning level of the children while Kim Young-tae, Seong Tae-jea and Lee Yun-kyung's 'Preschool Receptive ? Expressive Language Scale: PRES)' method was used to measure their language ability. In analyzing the data, the mean and standard deviation of the scores calculated from the experimental and control groups before and after the experiment were carried out. In order to measure the difference between the two groups, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was carried out with data before the experiment set as the covariance and data after the experiment set as the response variable. According to analysis of the data, there was a significant improvement in the distributive justice reasoning of young children in the experimental group who discussed conflict situations using picture books compared to children in the control group who engaged in story-telling using picture books. From this it can be inferred that a young child's moral reasoning was stimulated when it experienced a cognitive state of imbalance by discussing conflict situations in picture books, resulting in improving the child's moral reasoning. Therefore it can be concluded that discussing conflict situations naturally led to a development in a young child's moral reasoning. Also the receptive language and expressive language of the young children in the experimental group were statistically found to have improved significantly compared to the control group. It can be deduced that such results come from a child being able to come in contact with more language from the picture book than in daily life and a child acquires and expands on vocabulary while making an effort to justify the reasoning he or she makes upon hearing another person's thoughts. In conclusion, it can be inferred that a young child's moral reasoning and language abilities can be developed naturally by discussing conflict situations in picture books that children enjoy. This research can be utilized to help in instruction regarding a young child's reasoning and as preliminary data on how to improve a child's moral reasoning and language abilities using picture books. Furthermore, qualitative research would be necessary in order to carry out follow-up studies on the detailed aspects of a young child's moral reasoning.
