The purpose of this study was to examine the way fantasy are structured in Lee, Sungbok’s poems. Fantasy, a scenario that presents the subject’s desire, is composed of four elements, subject, object, sign expression and image. The most important key element of fantasy is the subject’s desire. Desire is manifested through fantasy and fantasy is activated by desire. All kinds of fantasy including primal phantasies and fantasy under unconsciousness are the subject’s activities to narrow the gap between his desire and real, and function as a framework that leads the subject to perceive the world as consistent and significant. Poetry, one of the outcomes of consciousness and unconsciousness, is the space of the fantasy where the subject’s and others’ desires are manifested. Therefore, it can be said that reorganizing a poet’s text into a structurized fantasy and then analyzing it represents the work to structurize the poet’s theory of creation, theory of existence and perception of the world. Lacan divided the reality of humans, linguistic beings, into the real, the imaginary and the symbolic. Fantasy can be understood as the closely connected structure of the three orders (the real, the imaginary and the symbolic). This study structurized fantasy in Lee, Sungbok’s poems into Lacan’s three orders, and then explored the subject, desire, and linguistic pattern of each order one by one. To begin with, the symbolic in Lee’s poems is the process in which the subject with fundamental deficiency ceaselessly asks about himself, the world and the pain of objects. Those questions create one symptom in close connection with the subject’s desire, and the symptom becomes a starting point that goes toward the world of fantasy. In that process, father-sign displays all of the three patterns (imaginary, symbolic and real), but the image of father who is the absolute as ego-ideal is more dominant. The symbolic, however, is the space containing the speaker’s deficiency, the permanent absence of the object of desire, and the death of object and father. In the space of the symbolic, patterns of impossibility (denial, distortion, mixture) and perception of language are sharply manifested. As desire for perfect language is stronger, the ‘damaged part’ of language becomes more notable. When it seems impossible to restore the damage, the subject of Lee’s poem enters the imaginary, dreaming of his first love. The imaginary is the space of the self, space of equalization and space where images are more dominant than language. Although the subject experiences the fantasy of narcissism in the mirror stage during such process, it does not secure fundamental unity and continuity. In the imaginary, the mother is expressed as an ideal-ego and its main image is maternity of salvation and sadness. While the symbolic displays patterns of impossibility, the imaginary represents the space of possibility. The images of space of possibility largely exist with water and trees. The illusive word love, on the other hand, belongs to langue, spoken word, that is, mother tongue, langue about skin and enjoyment involving the body. The features of imaginary language include poetic irony, repetitive dynamics of love through repetition and Juxtaposition, passivity and lyricism. Amid deficiencies which are not met even in the symbolic and the imaginary, the subject of Lee’s poems enters the process to seek the integration of dichotomic thoughts. The subject here is the subject of jouissance, that is the subject of impulsiveness, not the subject of desire in the symbolic. The impulsive subject that ‘transcends beyond the principle of pleasure’ tries to be close to the unapproachable and unrepresentable real through realizing language that ‘deviated from consciousness.’ In this process, the subject escapes from the subject-centered structure and is expanded to others and the world. The subject that leans towards others is decided as a triple being (father-son-husband) and born as a responsible being by directly facing others. The subject, born as a responsible being, embodies the responsibility into poems. The subject who opens himself to the world, on the other hand, concentrates on the physicality of a being. The humble body is exposed to lightness/heaviness, brightness darkness, building the ‘mud world.’ The jouissance gained here is considered pleasure discovered in the pain. The language of jouissance is also the language of play and language of body. Recently, Lee, Sungbok has accepted and practiced humble language that corresponds with miserable reality in his poems. This is interpreted as behaviors that eliminates ‘conscious writing’ between fascination and disillusion. The three orders above are neither divided geographically nor periodically. They are closely related and continuously change through influencing one another. That is, fantasy is composed of factors belonging to the symbolic (S) and the imaginary (a), and implies the function to connect (◇) the symbolic, the imaginary and the real (fantasy=S ◇ a). Fantasy does not mean an unchangeable structure but a structure that ceaselessly moves based on irresistible real crack, insidious hole. Consequently, in the triple structure (the symbolic, the imaginary, and the real) Lee’s poems plan the corresponding world that seeks the thrills of beings and extension of relationship. In conclusion, fantasy is the principle of creativity that goes beyond the narrow category called fantasy literature which has been discussed so far. It is also a comprehensive perception structure that structurizes life. Therefore, fantasy can be a useful method to comprehensively and organically research Lee’s poems. This study is significant in that it provides a framework for the in-depth understanding and analysis of Lee’s poems by building them into a system of fantasy and grasping the spot of unconsciousness as well as consciousness. It is hoped that aggressive research will be conducted on the poet’s future literary works. Besides, it is expected that if psycho-analytical fantasy is frequently applied to research on other poets, a map of fantasy that contains poets’ individual fantasy and poetic fantasy of Korean poems will be created.
