The number of the students who study overseas and want to do in the future has been continuously increasing because of various problems that Korean education has currently been faced with. Especially the enlargement of free trade, globalization, and other external factors have also contributed to the trend, which is not expected to be reversed in the near future. However, in reality, it is not easy for the students to make successful adjustments and achieve their goals. I, as a researcher, attempted to enhance the juvenile students' home self-esteem through bibliotherapy as a means of helping them adjust to the different culture and hereby achieve the goals of their lives, enjoying their overseas lives. Home self-esteem, which is a subordinate concept of self-esteem, refers to how much a child is loved and recognized by his family and how happy he feels in his family life. It is a key element in forming young people's sets of values and personalities, whose influence is extended to their social and school lives, and eventually has an effect on their attitudes towards their difficulties and problems they encounter. So I designed and tried a bibliotherapy program aimed at Korean high school students living in foreign countries in an attempt to enhance their home self-esteem and abilities to adjust to overseas environments. The subjects of this research, which lasted over the ten weeks of the second semester of 2007, were the eight second-graders of the high school of YB Korean International School in Gilimsung, China. The reading materials included eight items (Korean and foreign short stories, essays, newspaper articles, and etc.). And the program was composed in the four-step format developed by Doll & Doll(1997): preparatory step, material-choosing step, reading step, and the step of understanding-enhancing, follow-up measures and assessment. The hypothesis was that bibliotherapy would improve the home self-esteem of the Korean high school students living in foreign countries. Home self-esteem, which is one of the subordinate concepts, the measuring tools of self-esteem developed by Kim Hee Hwa(1998) was used to verify the validity of the research. In order to check the effectiveness of bibliotherapy, home self-esteem tests were carried out three times, before and after, and four weeks after the therapy was put into practice and then single repetitive measurement was applied to the data from the tests. For significant statistic differentials showed in the results of the analysis of variant volume, subordinate variations were analyzed after the program through Turkey HSD. Statistics were processed using SPSS for windows 15.0, and the level of statistic significance in verifying the hypothesis was set at .05. The results of the research based on the conditions above are as follows. This research hypothesized that bibliotherapy would improve the home self-esteem of the Korean high school students living in foreign countries. Analysis of the home self-esteem test scores through Tukey HSD showed that there were, on a statistic basis, significant differentials at the level of 0.5, between the tests before and after the program, but no significant differential between the test after the program and the subsequent test. Which means that the test scores improved after the bibliotherapy program and were sustained until 4 weeks after the program. Accordingly, the importance of this research lie in the fact that it extended the applicability of a bibliotherapy program to Korean high school students living in foreign countries. The reason why the focus of the research is on home self-esteem is that the home lives of Korean students living abroad, who are the subjects of this research, have more importance because their stay in foreign countries force them to have more limited contact with their relatives and friends living in Korea, Home is the fundamental unit where a family accepts and supports adolescents suffering physical and emotional changes and conflicts, the characteristics of adolescence. That means that the respect and confidence young people obtain from their family lives forms the basis for their lives. Naturally, home self-esteem bears significant relation with behavioral problems of adolescents. Therefore, family members' efforts to help their children are essential, and so we need to develop various family programs which help family members improve their relationship between them. Accordingly, my bibliotherapy program, which aims to improve the self-esteem of the Korean high school students living overseas, can be a meaningful way of helping the students deal with difficulties and problems they encounter and lead happy lives in foreign countries.
