Recently, wetlands are of growing concern because about half of them have disappeared in the whole world and the loss rate has been gradually speeded up since 1950's. Preservation of wetlands is quite important in a viewpoint of environmental conservation because wetlands have abilities of water storage, storm protection, flood mitigation, shoreline stabilization, erosion control, groundwater recharge and maintenance, and water purification. The Mulyeongarioreum wetland in Jeju Island, Korea was registered in Ramsar Convention Wetland because of its environmental and geological importance: it is emergent to support a variety of living things in its ecological value, and it is a scoria cone which is formed by the geologically important strombolian eruption. In this study, we investigate the extent and depth of the Mulyeongarioreum wetland to collect basic data available for wetland management and conservation. We carried out dipole-dipole resistivity surveys along four latticed lines in the wetland and performed three-dimensional interpretation of measured apparent resistivities using a finite-element method. In the inversion, a Jacobian matrix was calculated efficiently with reciprocity principle. The inverted resistivity images show that the Mulyeoungarioreum wetland occupies an elliptic area of 80 m x 60 m and reaches to depths of about 5 - 25 m in dry season, and is deeper in the northwest region.
