The present study was aimed at analyzing the process and effects of Satir's family group counselling for high school girls. In the study, a focus was laid on verifying the effects of Satir's family group counseling on high school girls' family stress, a way of dealing with communication and self-respect, divided by session. For this aim, a group counseling was conducted for 2 hours a week for 11 weeks in total, in application of theories and techniques of Satir's family therapy. At each session of counseling, such factors were examined as 'scales for family ties', 'scales for influence of erratic friends' and 'expression of emotion'.
The assignments of the study were set forth as follows:
First, what is the tendency of changes appeared in family ties, influence of erratic peers and expression of emotion by session of Satir's family group counseling? Second, what is the effect of family ties, influence of erratic peers and expression of emotion in Satir's family group counseling by session on family stress as a way of dealing with communication and self-respect of high school girls? Third, how does Satir's family group counseling transform family stress, functional way of dealing with communication and self-respect effectively?
The findings of the study might be summed up as follows:
First, as the sessions of Satir's family group counseling advanced, a significant correlation was found in 'family ties' and 'influence of erratic peers' (p<.01), while there was no significant correlation in 'positive expression of emotion';
Second, the regression analysis of family stress for each session of the experimental group revealed a significant correlation between 'family ties' at the first and ninth sessions and 'conflict in family relationship' at the ninth session, as well as between 'economic situation of family' and 'expression of emotion' at the first session and 'conflict in family relationship' (p<.05), resulting in reduction of family stress when there was close sense of 'family ties' and positive 'expression of emotion' among family members. In terms of consensus, a functional type of dealing with communication, statistical significance was shown in 'family ties' (7th, 8th, 10th and 11th sessions) and 'expression of emotion' (7th session) (p<.05), revealing that the functional way of dealing with communication could be improved as there was close sense of 'family ties' and positive 'expression of emotion' among family members. With regard to conciliation, a reverse-functional type of dealing with communication, statistical significance was manifested in 'family ties' (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th sessions) and 'expression of emotion' (1st and 2nd sessions) (p<.05), indicating that the reverse-functional way of dealing with communication, i.e. a type of conciliation, was intensified if there was close sense of 'family ties' and positive 'expression of emotion' among family members. Moreover, in the type of sur-reason, another way of reverse-functional dealing with communication, 'family ties' (3rd and 11th sessions) and 'influence of erratic peers' (9th session) turned out to have statistically significant correlation (p<.05), leading to a result that sur-reason, way of reverse-functional dealing with communication, could be reduced when there was close sense of 'family ties' but there was low 'influence of erratic peers'. The self-respect, however, didn't feature any significant difference throughout the whole sessions.
Third, an examination of the effect of family group counseling showed significant difference solely in 'conflict among family members' and 'influence of erratic peers' from the post-verification of both experimental and control groups (p<.05). No significant difference, however, was resulted from the pre-verification of the control group and post-verification of the experimental group, while significant difference was confirmed in 'family ties' from the pre- and post-verification of the control group (p<.05).
The researcher of this study, thus, selected 12 who had severe family stress, showed low sense of self-respect, but frequently used the reverse-functional way of dealing with communication from 25 participants in the experimental group in a measure to determine difference. From the post-verification into difference for both experimental and control groups, it was experienced that there was significant difference only in 'influence of erratic peers' (p<.05) but little difference in the pre-verification of the control group and post-verification of the experimental group. Whereas, however, there was statistically significant difference revealed from the pre- and post-verification for the experimental group in 'conflict among family members', 'type of consensus' which- is a functional way of dealing with communication, and sense of 'self-respect' (p<.05).
