In this study, a color filter incorporating a subwavelength patterned grating based on nano structure was proposed and accomplished. This device was composed of poly silicon and thin film aluminum. At the first, a visible filter based on a subwavelength patterned grating in poly silicon was proposed and realized on a quartz substrate. It was produced by utilizing the laser interference lithography technique. Especially, an oxide layer was introduced on top of the silicon grating layer as a mask to facilitate the silicon-etching and to enhance the filtering selectivity as well. The structural parameters for the device include the grating pitch and height of 450 nm and 100 nm respectively, the silicon stripe width of 150 nm, and the oxide thickness of 200 nm. The fabricated device offered a spectral response suitable for a blue color filter, exhibiting the center wavelength of ~460 nm, the bandwidth ~90 nm and the peak transmission 40%. The positional dependence of its performance was examined to find the effective area of 3 × 3 mm2, where the variation in the relative transmission efficiency and in the center wavelength was less than 10% and 2 nm respectively. And the influence of the angle of the incident beam upon the transfer characteristics of the device was investigated to reveal that the rate of change in the relative transmission was equivalent to about 1.5%/degree. At the second, a color filter incorporating a subwavelength patterned grating in a metal film perforated with a square array of circular apertures on a quartz substrate was accomplished. The finite-difference time-domain simulation was performed to analyze the device by investigating the effect of the structural parameters like the grating height, the period, the hole size, the refractive index of the hole-filling material on its performance. Especially the device performance was optimized by controlling the refractive index of the material comprising the holes of the grating. And two different devices were fabricated by means of the e-beam direct writing with the following design parameters: the grating height of 50 nm, the two pitches of 340 nm for the red color and 260 nm for the green color. For the prepared device with the period of 340 nm, the center wavelength was 680 nm and the peak transmission 57%. And for the other device with the pitch of 260 nm, the center wavelength was 550 nm and the peak transmission of 50%. The filling of the hole with a material whose refractive index is matched to that of the substrate has led to an increase of ~15% in the transmission efficiency. As for methods aforementioned, however, there is a crucial drawback not to effectively suppress the infrared region over 700 nm which affects to the performance of the CMOS image sensor. Thereby one-dimensional photonic crystal color filter integrated with a subwavelength metallic grating, which serves as IR cutoff filter, has been proposed and designed using the finite-difference time-domain method. A defect layer made of SiO2 film was inserted in the middle of the photonic crystal to provide a bandpass filtering characteristic in the visible band, and the metallic grating was used to enhance its performance by suppressing the infrared spectral band. The thickness of SiO2 was 133 nm, 0 nm and 40 nm for blue, green and red filter respectively. For Al metal grating, thickness was 150 nm and the thickness of SiO2 inserted above and bottom Al gratings was 50 nm and 450 nm. The transmission efficiency in the infrared region has been diminished by more than 70 %. Finally, in this paper we aimed at designing a new type of color filter which can suppress the infrared spectral band and is independent of polarization effect unlike the results mentioned in previous chapters. The color filter consisted of a dielectric layer sandwiched between two metal (silver) layers functioned with the shift of center wavelength by adjusting the thickness of dielectric cavity. Based on theoretical analysis, the thickness of Ag metal thin film was 25 nm and it of dielectric cavity was decided to be 100, 130 and 160 nm for blue, green and red filter. It was noted that maximum transmission efficiency was more than 60 % and the infrared region over 700 nm was considerably suppressed at the same time.
