In this study, adsorption isotherms and diffusivity of o-DCB (ortho-Dichlorobenzene) on an activated carbon heated at 1000 oC for 24 hours are predicted by using molecular simulation. The initial molecular structure of the activated carbon is designed on the basis of its molecular formula and functional groups ratio analyzed experimentally. Then, the molecular structure is optimized using the COMPASS (condensed-phase optimized molecular potentials for atomistic simulation studies) force field. The particle porosity, specific surface area, particle density and pore size distribution which are obtained for this optimized molecular structure of the activated carbon are compared to those experimental data. The errors between experimental data and simulation results of the particle porosity, specific surface area and particle density are 7.62, 3.79, and 2.80 %, respectively. The diffusivity of adsorbate within activated carbon pores results from the slope of MSD (mean square displacement) with respect to time, which is obtained from NVT-ensemble (Number, Volume and Temperature ensemble). Adsorption isotherms constants and adsorption heats of o-DCB are calculated by GCMC (Grand Canonical Monte Carlo) method in the optimized molecular structure of the activated carbon. The simulation results of the adsorption isotherms and adsorption heat show an error of under 3%, compared to those experimental data. The performance of the activated carbon is finally predicted before experiments by calculating adsorption isotherms and adsorption heats of two dioxins (2,3,7,8-TCDD and 2,3,4,7,8-PCDF) in the same molecular structure of the activated carbon as used for o-DCB. Keywords: Molecular simulation, POPs (Persistent organic pollutants), UPOPs (Unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants), Dioxin, Adsorption reduction, Activated carbon, o-DCB (ortho-Dichlorobenzene), GCMC (Grand Canonical Monte Carlo) method, NVT-ensemble, Adsorption isotherms, Diffusion coefficient.
