By operating urban transit, it produces environmental side effects such as noise and vibration which cause an unpleasant environment for transit passengers and residents who live around the area. These effects will rise as a social issue. This paper is to study on the noise and vibration issue induced by urban transit which effects the relationship of a transit and passenger in a station, and residents who are living around the urban transit area. If there is an open area that has such a noise effect more than 100Hz, it categorized as a noise pollution area, where the noise reduction wall is usually put up to reduce noise level. But it is a different scenario if it happens in the tunnel section which even it produce less than 100Hz, it creates much loud noise that provide an unpleasant experience to residents who live around the area. These kinds of ground-vibration and noise are propagated by surrounding medium, such as soil and rock, at track, underground structures, and surrounding structures. Therefore, it is very difficult to estimate the ground vibration and noise level. There are two methods, empirical and analytical method, to estimate urban transit ground vibration and noise. The empirical method has been proposed in the U.S. and Japan. These methods are based on the analysis of the field measurement data. The merit of it is easy to use. However it has to be careful to use these empirical methods, because our systems, such as train, track, and ground, are different from the U.S. and Japan. Also, The analytical estimate method is needed the high degree of professional approach for analytical model, establishment of train loads and et al. Therefore, even with the confirmation of the analytical system, there are still some question about the results. In this paper, the practical method, combined empirical with analytical technics to estimate urban transit ground-vibration was proposed and verified by the comparison with the result of field measurement in Seoul subway. The major contents of this study are listed as follow. First, the ground vibration and noise induced by urban transit has the different characteristic from the ambient noise. However, local vibration and noise indexes were specified only for vibration and noise in Korea traffic standard code. Therefore, FTA(Federal Transit Administration) code for vibration and noise of the various structure types was introduced. Second, in order to study empirical methods to estimate urban transit ground vibration, FTA(Federal Transit Administration), New York subway, Tokyo subway, Wilson, Ungar & Bender, Tokita methods were considered. Then, these methods were analyzed in detail. Third, field measurement was carried out to develop the estimate technics for ground vibration and to verify the developed method. When filed measurement, the kinds of track system was divided into ballast tack and STEDEF track. From the results of filed measurement, the magnitude of basic vibration source was broughted up. And, a rational correction method was proposed by the comparison and study of various empirical methods. Based on the above process, a basic equation was proposed to estimate urban transit ground vibration. Forth, because the ground characteristic of Seoul has a shallow bedrock and various change of ground condition. Therefore, in order to reflect these effects in this study, the finite element analysis(FEA) for ground damping was conducted. The variable considered in FEA was the position of tunnel, the kinds of ground and the distance and degree of tunnel from the reference point. From the results of FEA, the correction value about these variables was proposed. Finally, the practical method to estimate urban transit ground vibration was proposed by the study of updated empirical estimate method that was combined with field measurement and finite element analysis. And, the proposed method was verified by the comparison with the result of a field measurement in Seoul subway. When the estimate values using proposed method was compared with the field measurement ones, the deviation of them was within ±5dB. Therefore, it should be estimated that the proposed method from this study is reasonable and reliable.
