The purpose of this study is to research Jonathan Swift’s understanding of human being in his masterpiece Gulliver’s Travels. As Jonathan Swift’s writings cannot be separated from his career and his ideological background, I studied on the thesis with the help of the history and philosophical thoughts in Swift’s era. This in-depth study involves 6 chapters. The 1st chapter contains an introduction of wrong understanding that lasted for centuries on the writer’s work and my opinion about this problem. The 2nd chapter is about Gulliver’s Travels and Swift’s dramatic life. The 3rd chapter includes the socio-cultural history and philosophical ideas toward human nature in the 18th-century Britain. The Church’s understanding on the human being is also dealt with in this chapter because Swift was a Dean of the Church of England and he might have been influenced by the Church’s opinion. In the 4th chapter, I divide the characters appeared in Gulliver’s Travels into satirical and ideal categories and analyze them individually and objectively. The 5th chapter explains the existence of the distance between a writer Swift and his persona Gulliver. At the same time, I define Swift’s own understanding on the human being according to the previous findings. In the 6th chapter, finally, I conclude my thesis, trying to interpreting Swift’s messages to the world. The critics have thought that Gulliver’s Travels, especially “A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms,” is the result of Swift’s misanthropy. Yet their opinions can be regarded as misunderstanding caused by automatic identification of Swift with Gulliver. We can understand the Travels more objectively and reasonably with the recognition of the distance between the writer and his persona. Gulliver himself satirizes the foolish and the selfish speaking for Swift. However he is also satirized by the writer because of his own arrogance. That is, Gulliver is a means of Swift’s satire. Hence, we should try to understand Swift’s hidden intention instead of believing Gulliver’s opinion just as we are told. Futhermore, we must not consider Gulliver’s misanthropy to be derived from Swift’s attitude. Swift wrote the Travels to make people be aware of their true nature and to have them reform their nature into a better one. The writer thought that human being is savage, barbarous and full of pride and that human race enlarges their immoral nature misusing the power of their reason. Swift, however, never gave up his affection for human being. He insists that the people have the capacity to change their lives, exemplifying some ideal characters, such as the king of Brobdingnag who has good will and calm virtue, lord Munodi who is obedient to natural processes and respects the precepts of his ancestors, and Pedro de Mendez who is a good and charitable man. Swift clamors for the reform of human nature, shouting “Know yourselves!” to the people who do not recognize their weakness and immoral nature due to their arrogance. Key words: Gulliver’s Travels, Swift, satire, 18th-century British literature, the understanding of human being
