To our knowledge, even now there has been no attempt in realistically simulating the filter's disordered structure in 3-D geometry. Moreover, the role of the filter structure and its relationship with performance of the media has not been established yet. This is probably due to the difficulties involved in generating 3-D structures similar to that of a filter media as well as calculating the particle capture efficiency when the geometry is too complex. The study is the first step in developing an understanding of the role of filter geometry (non-uniformity and fiber orientation distribution) and fiber type (length and diameter) as well as the manufacturing process in the efficiency of filter media. There has been no theory so far which takes the above parameters into account when predicting the performance of a filter, nor theoretical method to evaluate pleated filter filtration efficiency and pressure drop. In this paper, three models were built for the pleat filter filtration pressure drop prediction. Model 1 was based on packed bed model, first looking pleat filter media geometry as big particles to calculate the pressure drop when air flows through the surface of filter media, and then looking fibers as small particles in order to evaluate the pressure drop when air flows in the media. In the model 1, effective fiber diameter is needed. Usually, it is hard to predict the effective fiber diameter, especially for those medias with widely range of fiber diameter vibration. Nowadays, it is very easy to test flat filter or media permeability. And all the factors, such as fiber diameter, porosity or solidity and thickness, even fiber distribution, is contained in the media permeability so that the results will be more accurate. In the model 2, we used Darcy's law instead of the part of filtration pressure drop through the filter media. In the model 3, keep the Darcy's law, instead of the other part with the pressure drop of air flows in the duck or channel. Comparing with experimental data, we found that when pleat width was not much higher than media thickness, the average velocity calculated by flow rate divided by the total filtration area was not accurate. Thus "effective velocity and effective thickness" concepts were introduced into these three models. This way, the pressure drop calculated by improved models based on effective velocity and effective thickness was much more accurate than the original one. Among these 3 original models and 3 improved models, model 3-2 is most reasonable and best. Compared simulation and calculation results with experimental data, we found that model 3-2 could be used in order to predict pleat filter filtration pressure drop. By using the average velocity method and the effective velocity method, we expanded pleat filter into flat filter, and then using the single fiber efficiency model, we predicted the filtration efficiency of pleat filter. Compared with experimental and previous research, we found this method did work. Usually, the actual media is multi-layer. According to probability, we found one method to solve this problem based on equation (163) and (164). Further, pleat filter optimization was also done. We found that using the above methods for pleat filter design is possible and it fits with experimental data as well. When filter media is pleated, attention should be paid, pleat width should be at least 4 times of the media thickness, otherwise the pressure drop will increase highly because of self block and media permeability decreasing. And the efficiency almost no increase, even decreasing. For our samples, the best pleat width should be about 3mm. And these best points will always change when the other factors change, such as media permeability and pleat height. Usually when media permeability or pleat height increased, the best pleat width shifts to high value direction; when media permeability or pleat height decreased, the best pleat width shifts to low value direction.
