This thesis is to study the aspects of discourse in Korean novels of the 1960’s focused on the discourse of modernization. In the 1960’s, the government of Bak Jeong-hee’s core predominant discourse was ‘the modernization of Korea’. Today’s social system is deeply rooted in the capitalistic modernization during the 1960’s. This study is to reveal how the novels in the 1960s reflected the discourse of the modernization of Mr. Bak and in what forms and in what contents. This paper studied the aspects of discourse of the novels written by Kim Jeong-han, Lee Ho-cheol, and Nam Jeong-hyeon in the champ of literature of the 1960’s. In the chapter Ⅱ, Literary circle’s reorganization process and topography of discourse in Korean novels of the 1960’s were studied. In the early 1960’s, Korean literary circles were divided into ‘Hanguk-Munhyem’ and ‘Jayu-Munhyem’. But In the mid-1960’s, various literary magazines were published. New literary circles were born against ‘Hanguk-Munhyem’ and ‘Jayu-Munhyem’. Some of those are ‘Sanmunsidae’, ‘Changjak-gwae-bipyong’, ‘Hanyang’, ‘Cheogmaek’, and ‘Sanghwang’. These literary circles expressed their own literary ideology in the champ of hegemony. The topography of discourse of the novels stood against Mr. Bak’s dictation and expressed the contradiction of Korean modernization in the 1960’s. The aspects of discourse in Korean novels of the 1960’s were divided into five parts : novels overcoming Korean War, novels of 4․19 generation’s revolution and free-sensibility, novels of contradiction of modernization, novels on anti-external circumstances and national identity, and popular novels. In the chapter Ⅲ, the novels of Kim Jeong-han were studied in the discourse of the community led by common people including farmers and Korean people’s identity. In the 1960’s, the commitment to current society by the writers grew after the controversy between purity and participation. In the process, common people became the main theme in the novels, raising the consciousness about the reality of common people and serious problems in the 1960's. Mr. Kim’s novels raises the concentration on the people’s lives. He criticized artificial modernization, and exploitation of the people. He tried to seek humanism, and Utopia. He also described the tragic division of the Korean peninsula and sought Korean cultural independence. In the chapter Ⅳ, the humble-capitalism, petit-bourgeois, red-complex and fear against Mr. Bak’s monopolistic dictatorship, post-colonialism and free-order were studied in the novels of Lee Ho-cheol. In the 1960's, the modernization, industrialization and urbanization led by the government brought about a lot of problems in the lives of common people against their will, which led them into petit bourgeois, disruption, fear, and even desire for overcoming the current existence. Mr. Lee brought forth the discourse that each individual gets concerned with social problems and when they have clear consciousness about the problems, their society could be radically changed, which makes them enjoy real freedom and their freedom in return helps build their democratic nation. In the chapter Ⅴ, Nam Jeong-hyeon’s novels were studied. Mr. Nam's basic concept in his novels is the concern with the national identity against foreign cultures. The characteristics of his novels are : modernization by subordinate-capitalism, which gave rise to the poverty of the common people : colonialism of foreign culture inundation, weakening of national identity : anti-communism and governing power which lead people into self-torture features. He emphasized the regrets for not overcoming the Japanese imperialism colony, which causes pro-Japanese power still to enjoy their material wealth to the present. His novel discourse was anti-external circumstances, national identity. The last chapter Ⅵ analyzed the modernization in the 1960’s and the literary historical meaning of the aspects of discourse in Korean novels in those days. The greatest change in the 1960’s was the modernization by the capitalism. The new trend in the literary history in those days was to find an individual’s inner world, to visualize it with linguistic sentimentalism, to understand social issues in the ideological views, and to explore the folks’ world with consistency. The three novelists mentioned above continued to reflect the modernization by the capitalism and the inconsistency in the social status in their own points of view and to write them in their works. In Conclusion, the discourse in Korean novels of the 1960’s are divided into five parts : novels overcoming Korean War, novels of 4․19 generation’s revolution and free-sensibility, novels of contradiction of modernization, novels on anti-external circumstances and national identity, and popular novels. And those novelists mentioned above formed the aspects of discourse in their novels against President Bak’s modernization of Korea. Of course there are other novelists who are left to study in the future: Shin sang-woong, Lee Moon-goo, Jeong Eul-byoung, Song Young, Hwang Seok-young, Song Kee-won, etc.
