The potteries excavated from the Gojaemigol Site in Baekseokdong, Cheonan, were examined for the identification of their physical properties and geochemistry. And the presumed raw clay was analysed in order to determine the identity between the potteries and raw materials. Lastly, potteries were reproduced using the presumed raw clay and talc tempers. The Gojaemigol Site includes thin rectangular, rectangular and square dwelling sites indicating Early Bronze Age. Thirty pottery fragments and five raw clays were collected for analysis in four areas. These pottery fragments were the parts of plain pottery, double-folded mouth pottery and polished pottery, and showed variations in color, temper, thickness and shape. Particularly, talc tempers were found in some potteries. Magnetic susceptibility was measured as mean 0.73(10-3×SI unit) and there was no distinctive feature by areas where the potteries were collected. It showed similarity between the pottery and raw clay that indicates the possibility of cognation. Specific gravity and absorption rate of potteries varied from 15.30 to 32.00(mean 17.92), and from 1.41 to 1.78(mean 1.66)%. A few potteries had possibility to be used for a grain storage due to its low specific gravity and high absorption rate. In microscopic observation, the potteries showed dark gray, yellow brown and red brown matrix, and they contained fine to medium-grained quartz and feldspar. Some potteries had red aggregates of iron oxides. The black sandwich structure in the cross section was also found in some potteries. X-ray diffractometer detected quartz, feldspar, mica, amphibole. chlorite and talc in the potteries, whereas there were no talc and amphibole detected in the raw clay. This means talc and amphibole had been added to the potteries by intention. Based on differential thermal and thermal gravimetric analyses, the potteries could be classified into two groups by firing temperature, one 800 to 870℃ and the other 900 to 950℃. In addition, the potteries and raw clay samples showed the same geochemical behavior of elements indicating that the potteries have been probably made by using the local clays in the Baekseokdong Site. The local raw clays were processed for making potteries and talc grains were added to some of pottery to determine effects of talc addition. As results, talc-bearing potteries showed higher specific gravity, lower absorption rate and faster thermal conductivity than plain potteries. Fast thermal conductivity indicates the possibility of talc-bearing potteries to be used for cooking. It was observed that the talc in the pottery changed from white to pale brown in color as firing temperature rosed. And it showed imbricate and fibrous structures in a polarizing microscope. Talc lost layered structure and underwent phase transition to enstatite in the 900∼950℃.
