The main purpose of this study, water quality and corrosivity were evaluated for raw water, treated water and water in distribution reservoir at major 8 drinking water treatment plants in Korea. It is also examining corrosion decrease plans by investigating heavy metal elution property on the water pipeline materials and degree of deterioration, and studying corrosion inhibition rate on each corrosion inhibitor. The water qualities of the tap, reservoir, the treated water and the raw water from 8 water treatment plants were analysed 4 times in April, June, August and October respectively. They showed gradual increase of Cu, Fe, Zn concentrations passing from the treated water to tap water. The average concentration of Cu from the tap water was 0.0176 mg/L, Fe, 0.0255 mg/L and Zn, 0.0346 mg/L. The average concentrations from the treated water were 0.0011 mg/L, 0.0041 mg/L 0.0067 mg/L respectively. They are shown to be increased comparatively. It is evaluated that elution by pipe line corrosion causes the heavy metals detection. Also, estimated corrosiveness through water quality analyse based on LSI, RSI, AI, LR, it was estimated they are all corrosive. The Cu, Fe, Zn concentration changes were examined on the used years of pipeline. Cu showed decreasing tendency getting pipeline older, while Fe was increased. In the mean time, Zn had no fixed tendency in tap water. However, it was estimated as time is passed, it is decreased in the congested water. In the aspect of pipeline materials, the copper pipe had gradual increasing tendency of Cu, and the stainless steel pipe, the Zinc pipe, the iron pipe and the synthetic resin pipe had both Cu and Zn increased. In particular, it is evaluated that the synthetic resin pipe was affected not by pipe corrosion but tap water devices like valve or gauge. Examined corrosion inhibition rate of corrosion inhibitors, corrosion inhibition was stabled in the concentration 3.5 mg/L of phosphate, silicate, and phosphoric acid so that similar proportion was displayed the concentration above. The regulated doses of phosphate, silicate corrosion inhibitors are 5 mg/L, 10 mg/L respectively. Most of them showed about 50 % corrosion decreasing effect at 4.9 mg/L. At 3.5 mg/L of phosphate concentration, release of iron was decreased by more than 70 %. Therefore, the study about water works devices and pipe materials contributing to corrosion is required to minimize the red water on the pipeline corrosion. Also, it needs to be established that the water treatment plant control corrosion with the standards and management plan.
